Chapter 15: The Origin

Start from the beginning

Kinsley chimed in with a grin. “She always has been.”

“No I haven’t!” Iris slammed her fist on the table.

Roger readjusted his red sunglasses and said. “Hmm…It has been three hundred years. And sometimes you act like a child.” 35 nodded in agreement.

“35 you too?” Iris gasped.

“Like I was trying to say before. I’m a scientist. Along with working for the King when I was human, I was also a doctor. I was curious as to how the human body worked. Back then we didn’t have many answer but people pretty much know it all now.” He mumbled something and then started tapping his chin. I reached for more bacon and so did 35. I don’t know how much longer I can keep eating. But I refuse to lose to him.

“So as a scientist I had to ask myself how can I continue to learn and make new discoveries.” Iris’s father continued.

“Vampires?” I guessed. Then I stuffed my mouth with bacon and 35 glared again.

“Yes! There were so many questions that popped into my mind. What were they really? How are they similar to humans? In what ways are they different? How can they turn humans into them? Where did they come from?” He looked off into space.

“He only was able to find the answer to one question in all these years.” Kinsley said.

“The Origin.” Their father whispered.

Iris went on to say. “We went in search for other vampires. All over the world. Our timing wasn’t in our favor. We started looking a few years after the vampire huntings ended. Many vampires went into hiding and denying what they were. Most didn’t know the history of the vampires because they hadn’t even lived one human life span. Many didn’t even care.”

“Talk about long winded speeches.” Kinsley rolled his eyes.

“Hey!” Iris glared at him. “It took a long time but we found a vampire that was a few thousand years old. He told us that there was a story only told by word of mouth about the origin of our kind. We were nothing like we are today.” She explained.

“Once I heard of the story I set out to find a written copy. I knew there had to be one. I took me a little over seventy years to find what I had been looking for. But I couldn’t read it. The book was written in Latin. It took me another ten years to master the language. I read the book cover to cover.” Their father ran his hand through his hair and then across his face. In doing this he parted his lips and revealed his fangs. They were a bit bigger than Kinsley and they gave me the same feeling. “I had heard all the stories before but just like anything told from person to person each story was warped in some way. Parts added others had some taken away. What vampires are today are just a subspecies, mutates if you will, of the originals.”

“The origin didn’t live forever; they had set life spans just like anything else on Earth. You see everything on Earth is meant to die, even the ground. It may not really be alive but there will be a time when it seizes to exist and will be replaced by a new. And that is why I’m trying to turn us back human.” She sighed. No one said anything, we all just looked at her.

 “Continue…” She waved her hand.

“Are you sure? You don’t have anything more to say? Because by all means I’ll let you finish. Ladies first.” Their father was a strange man. Able to switch from a somber, serious tone to a cheerful sarcastic one at the drop of a hat.

They went back and forth for about an hour, a father and his two children. Roger and 35 had long left the table. I would have too but I’m still not sure of my place here. So I stayed and watched them playfully pick on one another. Things like this haven’t happened  in my house since before Susie was born. When it was just me and my elder sister Mirajane. Back when my father cared about me. They’re smiles now mirror ours from back then, even though they live in this daily hell.

“Aleck?”

“Huh?” Iris and I were alone in the kitchen now. Outside the window I could see how dark the sky was. The moon was casting shadows all around the room. But Iris was place where the light hit her face. Showing off her perfect features.

“What’s wrong? You went into some kind of trance earlier and now you’re crying?” She smiled weakly and pushed the hair out of my eyes.

“Wha…” I felt my wet cheek. I had been crying. When I looked up to her she pulled me into her arms. I was relaxed as she held me and was comforted by her sweet smell. But as we stood there I couldn’t help but wonder how much of this was real.

How much of what I was feeling for her was just because of magic? How much of this was happening just because she wanted it? And really just how much was I willing to do for her?

“I’m here for you. Don’t worry.” She whispered in my ear. In that moment I realized that I did trust Iris with my life. I would be better and mean more to her than 35. After all he couldn’t help her. He is useless and didn’t deserve the time of day. Why she keeps him around I’ll never know. From now on I will be there for her because I am her 37. Her lucky 37.

“I…” She pecked my cheek.

“Well we really should get you home. Wouldn’t want your parents to ground you, so that you couldn’t come over everyday.” Iris said with a giggle. It was the same  one she used when she was Iris the school girl.

When she pulled away from me the feelings that I had just had felt odd and out of place. Like they weren’t my own. Was this a vampire’s power? Confusion replaced the comfort that she had given me. There was still way too much I don’t know about vampires.

“Right. My mother would most likely be home tonight so the sooner I get home the better.” As we exited I left behind all those odd feelings wondering if they would ever come back.
