Monsters.

When we were young, we were always so scared of monsters.
Laying in bed at night, huddled under the covers, staring at the wardrobe door, just waiting for it to open.
Being terrified of the dark, of the unknown.
Hugging your favourite teddybear, believing that it was your anchor, your saviour from the scary monsters.

As you get a little older, you learn that the boogie-monster isn't real.
You learn that there is no one in your wardrobe.
You get over your fear of the dark.
You put away all the teddy bears.

We stop searching for monsters.
We no longer have to check our rooms at night, making sure there is nothing in the confines of your space.
The monsters we believed were there, are no longer a worry.
Because now, we have our own monsters.

The monsters now are different to the ones you were scared of as a child.
As a child, you might of feared something from a movie.
You might of feared the stories your older brother told you about.

But now, the monsters are different. And, most of the time, they aren't things you have seen.
No.
Most of the time, the monsters you fear, are your experiences.
Traumatic events. Times when you were scared. Bad things you have done.

The monsters now, are based around you..

As we get older, we stop looking for nightmarish creatures under our beds and in our wardrobes.
You know why?

Because we realised that they aren't in your room.
No.
They are living inside you.
