The Darkness - A free verse poem.
The darkness seeps in.
No matter what I am doing.
The darkness will always come back.
The darkness will always follow me.
I feel like I'm in an ocean.
A black, inky ocean.
Blackness.
I try to swim up.
I can't breathe!
I push myself harder.
I can't breathe!
Whenever I am close to the surface, another thick black wave crashes down on me.
I. Can't. Breathe.
I'm succumbing to the darkness.
It's inky arms hold me, in a sick, twisted embrace.
I don't want to feel it.
But the darkness fills me.
Memories flood my brain.
So many memories..
So much darkness..
I laugh in the face of fear.
Because my biggest fear is myself.
There is nothing more terrifying than what your own brain can conjure up.
Fear I face everyday.
I am screaming for help.
Locked in a cage within myself.
My demons rule me.
They force me to smile. They send away the help.
I'm broken.
I'm shattered.
I'm engulfed in the darkness.
I'm not okay.
