After the last school bell rang, I went to my locker to get the books I would need for the weekend. As I crossed the courtyard heading for the library for detention I heard a car horn repeatedly beep. Many of the lingering students stared at the car. When I looked the horn stopped. It was the same car Iris had took me home in last night. She waved for me to come over.
“Come on get in.”
“I got detention. I can’t go yet.”
“Yeah a senior in high school right?”
“Yeah-”
“Today is Friday right?” She cut me off.
“Yeah so.”
“I bet you have never skipped anything school related ever right?” She smirked.
“Yeah, but-”
“So get in, your skipping detention. You have only a week and a half left of school, high school, your childhood. And if you don’t get in this car right now you will be robbing yourself of this memory. Of this moment to be rebellious, it could change your life. Come on…get in the car.”
“Fine. I’m just glad you aren’t trying to sell me anything.”
“You’re only coming because you know I’m right.”
She was right. I had played it safe my entire life. Always doing what I’m told, never taking any risk. I am happy with my life but not fully satisfied. The adventure that was promised with Iris is why I believed her and went with her. I once heard ‘If you really want to escape the everyday, you must constantly evolve’.
“Aleck, we’re here.” She smiled at me. “ You ready?”
“Why are you so excited?”
“I’m not. I’m just worried. When someone turns they become cold-blooded killers. I don’t want anything to happen.”
“You don’t think she’ll…”
“Um…no. She doesn’t even know that she is a vampire yet. 35 has been here all day, she hasn’t attacked him.” Iris said, but didn’t sound to sure of herself.
I was hesitant when we walked into the Partridge family home. It was just as quite as the day before. When Iris closed the door I heard calmly paced footsteps heading towards us in the foyer. A boy with brown hair and red sunglasses appeared.
“The brave one returns.” Roger sneered at me. “The girl is in the living room. She doesn’t know what she is yet she hasn’t fed. The girl thinks we are kidnapping her.”
“What’s her name?”
“Jade Dafoe, she is twenty-one years old.”
“She isn’t a child. I just come out and tell her.”
We walked into the living room. It was full of people, only two of the faces I didn’t know. 35 sat next to the long orange haired boy Oliver.
Iris’s brother, Kinsely stood in the corner playing a hand-held video game. Koco, the only one that looks like a vampire in the whole group, sat in an armchair to the left. An older man about twenty-four or twenty-five stood behind the couch.
And a girl with fear in her eyes sat in the armchair to the right.
“Jade…” Iris said softly.
“I just want to go home. Why are you keeping me here?”
Iris walked over to her slowly, everyone was silent. She went to place her hand on the girl’s cheek but she flinched away. “Do you know how you got those marks on your neck?” She asked.
Jade looked around the room; everyone had them except 35 and I. “This guy I met at a bar…he brought me a few drinks. He wasn’t half bad so I went with him. He took me to this house, there were others. We went into a room alone and I thought we were gonna…” She trailed off looking around the room again.
“What did he do?” Iris said in a motherly voice. Jade looked her in the eyes.
“He told me that his name was Krepsley and that he wanted me. Then he bit me. I passed out but woke up a few hours later. They were all asleep so I left.”
“Do you know what you are now?”
“What are you talking about?” Iris sighed and nodded to Oliver. He got up and left out of the living room.
“Jade you’re a vampire.” Iris said matter-of-factly.
I was a little shocked at how blunt she was being. Jade looked to have been processing it. Her face showed confusion and doubt. Then she just started laughing.
“Vampires aren’t real.”
“You are one.” Iris said in a sad but strong voice.
“No I’m not!” Jade said with no fear.
“Everyone in here is except him…” She pointed to 35. “And him.” She pointed to me.
At this time Oliver walked back in holding a medical bag of blood. He handed it to Iris and she waved it in Jade’s face.
“You are.” Iris ripped the bag open and the metallic smell of blood filled the air. Without hesitation Jade snatched the bag and drank it all.
