Joel's head raced with danger thoughts as him and his soulmate, Etho, were heading back from the Nether. When they were in sight of their portal to return to the overworld, Joel stopped, releasing his hand from Etho's. Etho ran for a few more steps before stopping, looking back at Joel.

"Joel? Are you okay?" Etho asked, looking his soulmate up and down. Joel's face was creased with worry, and he looked down.

"Do you think someone trapped the portal?" Joel asked, looking up at Etho. Etho glanced back at the portal, studying it.

"I don't think so. In the worse case scenario that it is, just get back through the portal and stay in the Nether, okay?" Etho assured his soulmate, taking his hand and leading him towards the portal.

"I don't know what to do. Are you sure?" Joel looked up at Etho, holding his hand tight. Etho pulled Joel closer, pressing a light kiss to his head.

"I'll go in unison with you. Where you go, I'll follow." Etho smiled underneath his mask, pulling his soulmate along. Joel smiled, reaching up to kiss Etho's cheek.

The two soulmates walked up to the glowing portal, which emitted a purple light that splashed onto their skin. Etho and Joel exchanged a quick glance before Etho stepped forward first, the purple light swallowing him. Joel followed him shortly after, the same purple light swallowing him too.

Etho was the first out of the portal, and he was immediately greeted with a heat almost stronger than the Nether itself. Joel was right, they were trapped. Within seconds, Etho's body was on fire, burns seeping up their skin, and he cried out in pain. Seconds later, Joel appeared close by, and Etho started to flinch when he started to feel Joel's pain as well as his. He knew that Joel was in the same amount of pain as him, and he heard Joel cry out in pain, falling onto Etho. Holding Joel close, Etho tried desperately to shield his soulmate from the blistering heat, not caring if he continued to get burned.

"Crap, Etho! Get back through!" Joel managed to yell out despite his pain. Etho almost couldn't see Joel, but he could feel Joel's hands pushing him away, trying to get him back through the portal.

"I can't! My legs are too burnt to move!" Etho cried out as more pain flared up both his body and Joel's. He felt Joel's panicked eyes on him, trying to move him more towards the portal. Etho stopped Joel, holding his hands.

"I'm staying with you." He shouted over the burning heat and the roar of the flames. Wincing once again, Joel buried his face deeper into Etho's chest, holding his hands tightly. Even if the pain was too severe for either of them to move at this point, Etho still managed to plant another light kiss to Joel's head.

"I love you, Etho." Etho heard Joel whisper, feeling the life slowly slip away from the two of them.

"I promise you, I'll see you again." Etho whispered as the bright flames continued to dance around them.

As the bright light started to shine, signaling their deaths, Etho held Joel as close as possible, feeling the life finally slip away from them.

"I'll stay with you, no matter what." Etho whispered, not caring if Joel couldn't hear him anymore.

"I promise."
