◜chapter thirty six◞

The group of five left the underground bunker, leaving through a fire escape and out into the darkness of the night. The left the abandoned car park and trekked towards a seemingly empty town. Cars littered the street that ran through it and housed where either caved in due to rain or covered top to bottom in ivy and shrubs. Cassie was walking on the complete other side to where she usually would, the furthest away from Ellie. Her feelings had started messing with her head and the best way to deal with it, was to ignore the cause.

It was a peaceful walk, quiet, the only sound being their footprints in the dirt

"i know" Henry spoke up, catching their attention "No one is here, no ones gonna be here because, my plan worked"

"so much goddamn talking" The sarcastic banter between the two older males made Cassie smile slightly whilst she kept her eyes on the floor.

"im just saying, i deliver! make this right, go down the street. Embankment behind the last house... and were out" Henry shrugged

"so we cross the river and then what? where you gonna go?" Ellie asked, Cassie cursing at the single butterfly that refused to leave her stomach

"dont know yet" Henry replied

"well were going to Wyoming" Ellies comment made Joel turn his head back so quickly cassie swore he looked like an owl for a moment "what! its a huge state, it can fit two more people"

"yeah" Henry spoke up after a moment of silence "maybe we just call this one a success and say our fond farewells"

"no, he'll change his mind trust me. This is how it goes, hes like 'no Ellie, never ever, ever happening' and then me and Cass are like 'were gonna ask you like a million more times' and hes like-" Ellies mimicking got cut off by loud gunshots, hitting the ground beside them. They all ducked, Ellie practically diving over to Cassie. Joel ushered them all behind the cover of a car

"the fuck is that coming from?" Henry asked

"shut up" Joel spat

"end house, top window" Cassie whispered as Joel peaked his head over the boot of the car, all of them ducking as more gunshots sounding "is he using a fucking sniper?"

"shit, alright, fuck. Lets move, lets go" Henry spoke and started rushing away with Sam as Joel nodded at Cassie

"what are you doing!" Joel called to the two boys

"getting the fuck outta here" Henry called back just as a bullet hit the car in front of them. The two rushed back to the car they were previously hidden behind. "what do we do?"

Joel peaked his head up again, a bullet flying right by him. He then turned straight to the girls as he tucked his gun away

"alright, stay here"

"what?" Ellie asked as Cassie looked at the man with wide eyes

"if you dont move" He looked between the girls "hes not gonna hit you. Im gonna go around, try to get in the house through the back and then ill take him out"
