"Hey." I swung my door open, holding it wide. "Come on in."

It's embarrassing how timid I've been around James. He's thrown my confidence off balance, and now I have to pep talk myself before asking him out? It's wrong. So damn wrong.

My reaction last night didn't even come close to how I felt when he came home for my birthday. Last time, I was welcoming back my best friend. This time, I'm welcoming back a stranger who I've barely heard from in months.

But if I'm being completely honest with myself, I don't know how to act around him anymore after his... confession... at Halloween.

Are sexual jokes still on the table? Can we have normal sleepovers? Can we hang out without him looking at me like he did in October?

"How were the movies?"

"Really good, same as every year." He nodded, closing the door behind himself. "How's everything here?"

"Good- boring. Just recovering from last night, Mom and Dad are at work so..."

"Home alone?" He asked with a smirk.

An insinuating smirk.

I can't help it- there's a massive, uncontrollable smile spreading across my face.

"What?" He looked at me confused as he slipped off his shoes.

"Nothing." I giggled. "Just glad to have you back."

I practically skipped into the kitchen, sighing in happy relief. "I went to the corner store- got your favs."

I gestured to the counter full of sweets and chocolate. "They have popcorn and hot drinks stands there, so they'll be nicer than me buying us soda." I jumped onto one of our counter stools.

"You didn't have to go out and get stuff, I could've stopped on the way." He politely pulled out a stool and sat with me.

"I know, but I had nothing better to do. I was wasting time." I was still grinning, kicking my Christmas pj covered legs. The gingerbread men on the white background match my red hoodie.
"I like your pants." I smiled at him, happy he matched the dress code.

"I like yours." He raised a foot to kick mine, doing a boyish smile at the action. He looked so soft. Fresh shaved, fluffy hair, comfy clothes, my comfort smile. I don't know why I was worried. He's my best friend. Always has been always will be.
