◜chapter twenty eight◞

Start from the beginning

"so where'd you go" Ellie asked the man again, wary of Cassie's eyes on her yet again

"pretty much nowhere" Blowing into the tube to vacuum the gas out of the car

"how does that work" The blonde girl asked, watching the liquid drain from the car

"its a siphon, its when liquid travels against gravity because pressure"

"you dont know" Ellie stated with a smirk

"i know it works" Joel stated making the two girls laugh. The girls stood around awkwardly after that, the man telling them they're not allowed to wander so the curly haired girl took to sitting on the trunk of the car, fiddling with the bracelet on her wrist. They had ditched the bandage, her wounds scabbing up and scarring over. Cassie hated them but Ellie said they looked badass so she wore them with pride.

"okay" Ellie spoke up out of nowhere "this is your fault" She pulled out a familiar book from her bag which made Cassie grin at the memories that came with it. She flicked it open to a random page and started reading "it doesn't matter how much you push the envelope, itll still be stationary"

The two girls cracked up at the god awful joke that Joel was not impressed with

" 'no pun intended, volume too' by will Livingston" Ellie showed the man, Cassie watching with a smile. A reoccurring situation " 'volume too' look, you get it? 'too' like t-o-o"

"Jesus" Joel muttered under his breath

"your so grumpy, enjoy the joke old man" Cassie commented, giving the man a faux mad look

"what did the mermaid wear to her math class" Ellie continued as Joel stood himself up, the two girls staring at him in anticipation "an algae bra. Like, algae bra." The joke yet again made the two girls laugh "i stayed up all night-"

"no" Joel attempted to cut the girl off with a shake of his head

"-wondering where the sun went. Then it dawned on me" Joel, still not impressed, crossed his arms as he leant against the car

"feel free to wait in the truck"

"okay" Ellie threw her hands up in surrender

"you cannot escape Will Livingston" Cassie pointed at the man with a grin

"he will be back" the smaller girl called out as the two girls walked back towards the truck

"and there's nothing you can do to stop him!" The blonde added as the pair got into the truck, both now in the back as Cassie wanted to nap eventually and Ellie wanted to sit in the back

As they took off driving again, Ellie took a while to look around from her seat in the middle. Cassie's head placed precariously on her shoulder with her eyes closed. She wasnt asleep but the peace she had left was coming to an end as they entered the open road. Something was due to happen soon, it had been good for too long

"i wanna see a tank" Ellie exclaimed after Joel explained what the trucks where used for back then

"you will" Joel assured the girl "tanks, choppers, all that stuff but they'll fight the wrong enemy. Just, scattered around now"

"i got something" Ellie was digging around in the pockets on the seats, a tape in her hand. She leant forward, between the middle console and tapped Joel with it "here, this make you all nostalgic?"

"this is actually before my time" Joel told the girl, putting the tape in the player and turning the volume up "its a winner though"

"oh my god" Cassie muttered through a yawn as Ellie pulled out a men's magazine from under the chair. The girls eyes widened, leaning into the girl beside her to look closer at the pictures "seriously oh my god. If we run into a clicker that looks like that. Damn"

"its uh, its light on the reading but it has some interesting pictures" Ellie commented bitterly but her eyes still didnt stray from the pages

"no, no, no put that back" Joel spoke urgently, the two girls still flicking through the pages. Opening it to a page that unfolded, a very... interesting... picture unravelling with it "no that's not for kids"

"how would he even walk around with that thing" Ellie commented, her eyes wide. Cassie gaped, neither girls where necessarily innocent. They knew the basics; the anatomy and what to do with it etc. But neither girl had seen one, in real life or photos. Ellie, for an obvious reason to everyone but her best friend, didn't find it all that attractive. More so in shock that something on a humans body could be that big.

Cassie though, she had forced herself to find things like that attractive. Boys and Girls where meant to be together. She was meant to find guys attractive, and sure, some of them where pretty and all but she quickly realised a lot of the guys she liked had very feminine features. And sure, it kind of appealed to her but something in the pit of her stomach new that it wasnt for her. Men, weren't for her, even if she didn't totally realise.

"please get rid of it" Joel begged

"Hold your horses" Ellie snapped "i wanna see what the fuss is about and Cassie's loving it"

"loving it might be a push" Cassie mumbled to herself, keeping her eyes trained on the pages. Forcing her brain to pretend to like it. She didn't know what was wrong with her but she knew she had to figure it out soon

theres a very special character coming up soon that is going to help Cassie realise that its okay to like girls and that if she still finds guys attractive too then that's also okay

theres a very special character coming up soon that is going to help Cassie realise that its okay to like girls and that if she still finds guys attractive too then that's also okay. Its based on a good friend of mine who has helped me with a lot of my stories and lets me rant to her all the time (plus, i need to give my man Joel a break and this character is gonna be that break)
this also means the slow burn is coming to an end. ellie and cassie very clearly act like a couple (minus the intimacy) but cassie is uneducated and thinks her feelings are just friendship which is why this new character is going to be a vital part in cassies story
