isabella's pov

nate looked at the girl in front of us, widened his eyes, and turned stiff.

"uh, hey, jeda." he said awkwardly, as i stood there confused.

"how are you?" the girl, jeda, asked.

her weight was shifted to one leg. she looked over at nate and i could tell that he was uncomfortable.

"um, i'm good, you?" nate asked, looking down.

jeda just nodded, she probably noticed how awkward he thought this was. i looked up at nate but he didn't look at me.

"who's this?" she asked, pointing to me.

i furrowed my brows discreetly as nate put his arm loosely around me.

"oh um, this is isabella, my new, uh, girlfriend." he said, clearing his throat.

she raised her brows and looked kind of shocked.

"her?" jeda asked, pretending like i wasn't even there.

uh, okay then.

nate didn't say anything, he just glared at her.

"okay, well see you around," she said, finally walking the other way.

he waved and she did the same.

i pulled him over to the side of the mall railing.

"uh, who was that?" i whisper-yelled.

he spoke in a regular voice, "oh, she was just my ex. her name was jeda, by the way."

i rolled my eyes, "just your ex? what problem did she have with me?"

"no, babe-ugh!" he covered his face with his palm and let out what seemed like a groan, but honestly i wasn't sure.

i gestured for him to continue.

"she didn't have a problem with you, it was probably just awkward, give her a break," he finished nonchalantly.

i looked at him weirdly, "why are you defending her, nate?"
