CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Resurrection

A HIGH-PITCHED WHIRRING SOUND CUT THROUGH THE SILENCE.

I couldn't decipher whether the sound was in my head or coming from an external source. It was preventing me from coming up with a logical thought. As though my mind had come to a standstill, I was simply the empty shell of a human.

It wasn't until the door shut behind me that I was pulled from the void.

"What's wrong?" His muffled voice filled my ears, and I was relieved to hear something other than nothing.

I turned away from the desk and looked up at Vader who stood tall before me. "Fix him," I uttered, my hands clenching into fists. "Fix him, now."

He pulled off his mask before looking behind me. Once he saw Sev's body on the desk, he walked over to it and scanned it with his eyes. A look of regret came over his features and he glanced back at me. "Kyda..."

"Don't say it," I ordered sternly, shaking my head. "Do not say it, Vader."

His hands took a tight grip of my shoulders and he pulled me closer, looking down at me with furrowed brows. "He's gone."

"No," I countered stubbornly. "You can fix him. You can fix anything."

"The damage is irreparable," He said lowly, tightening his grip on me. "I'm sorry, Kyda-Sin."

His words felt like a blade in my gut, jagged and rough. I had known since it happened that Sev was gone forever, but hearing it confirmed aloud was like going through the pain all over again.

"You can let go of me," I muttered bitterly. "Don't worry. I won't go crazy again."

"I'm not worried," Vader stated, stroking my arms. "I'm just here for you."

I met his eyes, knees almost buckling and forcing me to grab onto his suit. "You really can't fix him?"

Instead of speaking, he let out a sigh and pulled me into his chest. His arms wrapped tightly around me, and I felt as though he was carrying the weight of my heartbreak.

"Sev was my last connection to her," I mumbled, my vision blurring with hot tears. "The one living link to my family."

"I'm sorry," He whispered, kissing the top of my head. "I'm here for you, Ky. Whatever you need. Whatever you want."

"I just want my Sev," I cried, my words causing the dam to break as I burst into sobs. Vader remained silent, gently swaying me in his arms as he allowed me to cry it out. It helped me feel better to have him with me; it made me feel less alone.

My tears had slowed and my breathing had regulated when Vader gently lifted up my chin. "Kendyl's outside."

I frowned at his words. "Why?"

He shook his head, "I'm not sure. Would you like me to send her away?"

Before I could reply, the door opened and in walked Officer Kendyl herself. She had a sympathetic look on her face and I turned away to wipe the tears from my cheek.

"I'm so sorry, General; I heard about your droid," She said, wincing when she noticed Sev's body on the desk. "We want you to know that we take this issue very seriously."
