Here, enjoy some Codywan angst (with a hint of fluff)

CW: Death, blood

--

A silent explosion rang through the city.

"O-Obi-Wan-" Cody rasped, reaching for his limp General, who lay facing away from him. He managed to place a hand on his shoulder, pulling him onto his back. Obi-Wan's head lolled, and it horrified Cody. His breathing grew painfully panicked and he grabbed Obi-Wan's wrist to feel for a pulse, a twitch, something.

There was nothing there.

Cody would've tried to shake him back to life if he could feel the rest of his body. Somehow, they'd both been so distracted that they'd been caught off guard by the explosion. Cody wasn't sure what had distracted them, though. Cody wasn't even sure why they were outside on the landing platform in the first place. Surely, there was no need, not when there wasn't even a speeder parked there.

Wait... Now that he thought about it, maybe there had been a speeder there. He couldn't remember, though. His thoughts and memories were blotchy.

His head dropped and he wanted to cry. The bleeding headache he had was enough to make him wish that the stars in the sky above would just swallow him up and take him already. He didn't want to suffer through this alone, not when he'd be dead anyways.

Suddenly, Obi-Wan squeezed Cody's hand, and Cody weakly looked up at him. The man stared down at him, his lips parted as he struggled to breathe a few weak breaths. Impossibly, he cracked a grin, his voice scraping against the buzzing in Cody's head. "Cody... Cody, what happened? You-" He muffled a cough, blood staining his lips as he smiled, "Darling, you look so scared."

He would've rolled his eyes if just keeping them open didn't already hurt enough. Of course he was scared - For kriff's sake, as far as he knew Obi-Wan had been dead a few seconds ago! Not to mention the fact that he was in an immense amount of pain and could hardly keep his thoughts. What, was he supposed to be relaxed?

"Cyare... you just died. And came back to life. I don't- I don't think you should be talking." Cody felt dizzy, and his legs were already going numb. He shouldn't have been speaking either, but that didn't matter. He'd die here anyways, no matter how much he wanted to live, how much he still wanted to see. Before this, he was going to live, he was sure they both would've.

And to think that this almost could've been romantic.

"Nonsense, Cody. Nothing- nothing can hurt us anymore." Obi-Wan sighed a shaky, falsely content sigh. He looked back up at the sky and his face fell dim again. He gave up on forcing himself to breathe and nearly let the Force take his body. This was what he'd been waiting for, wasn't it?

Still, he was hesitant about letting himself drift away that easily. Every other way he'd expected to die was lonely. Every other way he'd expected to die had made him want to die. Although, here, he wasn't alone. And that made him want to hold on. To him, that in itself was enough of a reason to live. To him, that was enough to force him to breathe, even shallowly.

Well, at least he'd die holding someone's hand.

Poor Anakin.

"Obi-Wan," Cody pleaded, his voice barely coming out in a hoarse whisper, "Promise me... promise me, that-that you'll think of us this way. That as we die here, we can- you can pretend we- everything was fine here. We- we were- happy, these last moments were- they were, happy. They were a- a dream. Haat'mitir ni... darasuum. Can you- please-" He cut himself off; He was the one coughing up blood now.

Using the last of his energy, Obi-Wan slipped his hand away from his grasp. He wrapped his pinky finger around Cody's and squeezed weakly. "I'll be with you until the very end, cyar'ika."

Cody's gaze drifted off. He was sure he was done, he was sure it'd go by quickly, but it was slow - excruciating even. He lost himself in the night sky, but the pain just wouldn't subside. He couldn't even mourn when Obi-Wan stopped breathing, or when their intertwined fingers grew rigid. He couldn't feel it anymore. He could hardly feel anything.

At some point, the pain behind his eyes became too much, and his breathing drifted off into the cool night air and away, his heartbeat finally resting.

Cody lay next to Obi-Wan in a boat in the middle of a vast lake. Cody had his head resting on Obi-Wan's shoulder, perfectly comfortable with the awkward tilt of his neck. Obi-Wan's cloak was stretched around them both, keeping them decently warm. They'd come out here to get a good view of the night sky, the constellations clear and bright above them. Hardly opaque colors painted the sky in faint clusters and clouds and swallowed them both up. There was something about being present here that felt so jejune, so cool and... whole.

The scene was serene, and he was so grateful he was frozen in it.

Cody glanced up at his lover, his eyes sparkling with a glimmer of hope and all the stars in space. Obi-Wan squeezed their pinky-fingers together and tilted his head towards Cody.

The scent of cinnamon and mint on his breath, he spoke with a gentle, pricelessly genuine smile. "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"

Cody looked back at the night sky, the swirling lights of distant space and far-flung galaxies flitting his attention about. He thought brief thoughts about moons and planets and stars and lives far, far away, and it brought warmth to his lips. Maybe, in another life, he could've made it there. Maybe, in another life, things could've changed and been different, and he could've seen it. But none of that mattered now, and he made no move to despair over it. So, he greeted sleep with a smile, happy that this was the last moment in his heart.

And as he made no move to hold on, the dimming light of the stars faded away, and the night plunged into darkness.

"Ni liser ash'amur briikase."

Translations:

Cyare - Beloved

Haat'mitir ni darasuum - Promise me forever

Ret'urcye mhi - Goodbye/Maybe we'll meet again

Ni liser ash'amur briikase - I can die happy

Also, "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" is a way of saying "I love you" in Japanese. "I can die happy" is the response to it, from what I've read. I just really like how it sounds and felt obligated to include it for some weird poetic reason lmao
