You were the daughter of an engineer, who almost desperately wanted you to find a husband. Luckily for you the weekly conversations about your love life got less painful after you began courting with a man by the name of Thomas Sharpe. He was absolutely stunning. jet black hair and beautifully soft hands. For a man of construction himself, you would've thought that his hands were rough. But no... his hands were as gentle as his personality.

You hadn't told your father about Thomas yet, because you knew he wouldn't approve of him. As much of a gentleman he was, he was from England, so one day you knew he would have to return. Also, your father had complained about him to you. Saying that he had no experience of hard work and that he couldn't come to America asking for your father's money with hands like that.

--------

One morning you came downstairs and into the dining room, where your father was waiting for you.

"Good morning dear. You look more like your mother every day." He smiled warmly at you. Your mother died a few years after you were born, and you were raised by your father and your nanny.

"Thank you, daddy." You leaned down and kissed his cheek before sitting down to your breakfast.

"There is a ball tonight I would like you to attend with me. I heard that the McMichael's are going to be there. And their son, I really think you two should get to know each other. he's a doctor you know."

"I know daddy, I would love to go." You smiled at the thought of going to the ball, Thomas was sure to be there. After all he was the one to first mention it to you. He even asked you about going with him. You had to decline though as you didn't want your father to go nuts once he saw you two together.

"Perfect, I will make sure you have a dress for tonight then."

"Thank you."

----time skip----

It had just gone 6 pm, you and your father had arrived at the ball and there was already a sea of people. from the distance you noticed the McMichael's: Mrs McMichael and her son Alan, Eunice was also there, talking to... Thomas. You saw him and your eyes lit up. He looked around the room trying to escape Eunice's grasp. You both hated her deeply. He continued to scan the room until he noticed your smile. His face gained back the light that had drained his eyes from talking to that woman. He waved his hand signalling for you to come over, you pointed at your father and he nodded, seeming to understand that you were stuck to him for the next few minutes as you went round.

To your pleasure your father had seen the McMichael's and had walked you both over to them. you made pleasantries with them just before Eunice pulled you to the side.

"Isn't the baronet handsome?!"

You smiled at him talking to Alan, "yes he is..."

"I can't believe he's here! I hope he asks me to dance, he is such a gentleman."

"I'm sure he will..." you frowned at her desperateness.

"Don't worry y/n, you'll be sure to find your place here with a man. Unfortunately for you it takes someone with my class to get a man like him. You'll just have to wait your turn. I'm sure your desperate acts will fool someone one day my dear." she walked off with a smug grin plastered on her face, she tried to loop her hand in the crook of Thomas' elbow, but he shrugged her off as he looked at your frown. He walked over to you and took your hand in his.

"Y/n what did Eunice say to you? Are you alright my love?"

"Nothing Thomas I'm fine, you should go back to her, we don't want my father to think we're together. You know what he would do."

"I know... but I do not care. You are the most important thing in my life, and I want to make sure you're okay, no matter what your father says. Now, please tell me what's wrong?"

"Eunice told me that I had no chance with you, she said that I don't have a high enough class to-" you were cut off.

"Thomas?" Eunice's hand was placed rather firmly on Thomas' arm, "shall we dance, they're clearing the room." She gave you a dirty smile and tried to pull Thomas with her, but he didn't move.

"Thank you, Eunice, I'll be sure to, just not with you." he still had his hand in mine. "I believe you own y/n an apology, you have greatly offended her, and I would not have the woman I court upset on such a beautiful evening."

Her mouth was agape and so was yours, you didn't want people to know about the company you keep with Thomas, but when he announced it to her, you were on cloud nine.

"I-I'm sorry y/n," she stuttered.

"Thank you, Eunice," I looked around the room, we had stirred up a small commotion. however the only people who saw the disturbance was the McMichael's and your father. "Thomas... people are staring."

"Let them. How about that dance Miss l/n?"

You smiled at him and nodded. He was such a gentleman. He led you to the middle of the dance floor and began to sway gracefully to the piano in the background. By the time the pianist stopped playing it was just you and Thomas. You had apparently managed to captivate everyone's attention and unfortunately there were a couple of dirty looks that came upon you, but they were expected. what you didn't expect was your father's calmness to your dancing.

People clapped as you ground to a halt, and you stared into each other's eyes for a minute before going into a deep kiss. you pulled away and smiled at Thomas as you lead him to your father. he gave you a worried look, but you whispered that it was going to be okay.

"Daddy. You know Thomas don't you."

"Of course darling." You could tell he was biting his lip. Not wanting to hurt you, "how long have you two been courting."

"Long enough to ask you if I could make her my wife..." Thomas said proudly as he spoke before you had the chance. you looked at him with a shocked expression, the thought of marrying Thomas had never come up in conversation before. You never thought about marrying him before, but it was obvious to you that you wanted to spend your life with him.

"Daddy please..." I said breathlessly, completely ecstatic about what he'd said. "I've never wanted anything more in my life. Thomas is good to me... he loves me."

Your father sighed, "you know my opinion on this man my dear... but I have never denied you anything and I am certainly not prepared to deny you love. I you wish to marry this man, then I am more than happy for you to do so."

You tugged on Thomas' arm that was firmly in your grip, smiled up at him and squealed just a little. You couldn't contain your joy. So much so you leapt into your father's arms and hugged him.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you daddy!" you squealed. You let go of your father and took Thomas' hand once more.

"Take care of my daughter Thomas." he gave you both a genuine smile and you walked away. But you were close enough to hear the last words your father said, "if you hurt her, I will have my way with you. No doubt about it."

"I understand sir."

Thomas took your hand once more and kissed you passionately.

"So was that a yes?"

"Yes Thomas."

A/N: I couldn't remember whether Eunice was Alan's sister because I haven't watched the film in a while. I really liked writing this one, so I hope you liked it. Only 92 more. hehe ❤
