I was shocked by what I saw for a few reasons: The previous day I’d been at a brunch with the congressman who said that he was a part of this initiative with the Chinese government to help unify all the party youth under one mobile application. He referred to the party youth as Hitler Youth; hence, I was prepared to see highly organized young people, with no right to free speech or free thinking at the university, where the student population consisted of many wealthy young Chinese. What I got at Nottingham was free-thinking kids who are essentially no different from their counterparts in North America. We spent the day, four or five hours, going around the campus and being shown how wonderful it was and how the students are and all these other things and they really did a good job on the opening day. Then we wound up having dinner with the faculty heads of engineering.
Ningbo felt like a mini England in the middle of China and I fell in love with the city. I decided to go back and live there for a few weeks, but we’ll get to that a bit later.
