It was interesting finally to be with my parents in China. I was able to observe how they behaved in a more social context, and my dad especially was interesting. He’s not very social; you won’t see him very often with other people, and as a result, it makes it very difficult to see how he behaves. He has a very bad habit of hanging up on you before you’re done talking; he’s always in a rush to leave or in a rush to get away from the social situation. Watching him in his native element was interesting, because I thought it must just be language barriers in Canada that prevented him from being social, but it turns out that he’s just like that all around the world and it was good to understand this.
