“The road we follow is long and wide but I knew it well until you came and made a new one great and wide,” Tash07

I awoke with a start and clutched my head. My eyes roved around the room and then settled on the two figures near to me. “Where…” before I could finish Erid’s mother shook her head and pressed me back down onto the bed. “They’re not here,” she said. I looked at the figure beside her, it was Luminitza. “Don’t worry I told her everything she knows what’s happening and she will help,” Erid’s mother continued. My eyes winded for a moment and then I nodded. “I need to get to work,” I said. Luminitza nodded and spoke. “I have someone who can give you a drop and bring you back.” I nodded and then sat up. “I need to get there now,” I said. Madame sighed but nodded. “The sooner the better but please hurry I have never seen this old gypsy concoction at work with a human it might have effects that I may not know of,” she said. I got off the bed and walked to the wardrobe, I grabbed a pair of jeans and a black tee-shirt and some underwear.

My bath was quick and shorter than I would have liked in, I donned my clothing and walked back out to the room. Madame was here but Luminitza was gone. “Dmitry where is he?” I asked grabbing my jacket. She sighed and I spun around. “I’m afraid he won’t be with us for quite a while after the beating he took,” she said. My eyes almost popped out. “I tried to stop him but…” My hands shot up to my face. “Listen child he will be alright, he is not human after all he will heal quickly but he needs time,” she said. I nodded and wiped my eyes. “I’ll bring that drug back,” I said. She nodded and led me outside past several doors and down the steps.

We met Luminitza in the hall and she led me outside towards a dark blue car. “My friend Paulo will drive you to your work and back,” she said as I walked around to the passenger side. She stopped me before I got in and spoke. “And Caith please try to bring back that sample because I can’t imagine losing Eridian,” I nodded and got in. She smiled and I turned to the driver. He had black hair and seemed nervous or it was just me. I slid down in my seat and looked out the window as he drove off. I thought about Luminitza’s words and wondered exactly what she meant. “She did not want to lose Erid, did that mean that I was keeping them apart I know I was sort of but her words they still lay in my mind.

We stopped for gas and Paulo brought some snacks. He seemed to be really quiet and had a knack for tapping his long fingers on the steering wheel. I knew this ride was going to take whole day so I used the washroom at the gas station; I ate some snacks, and then snuggled into the seat. The ride was silent as ever. I awoke before we reached and stared out the window. Paulo had awakened me to ask for directions. I led him to the police station. When we arrived I thanked him and looked up to see his eyes wide open. “Are you ok?” I asked. He nodded. “I’ll be right back,” I said and opened the door and stepped out. I hugged my jacket closer to me and made my way to the station. I entered the lobby and stared at the officer on desk duty. “Hey Errol,” I said. He smiled and I walked past. I knew this was going to be like stealing but if I had to steal to get Erid away from that stalker attitude I would gladly do it. I walked past the filing office and made my way down to the Evidence room.

I threw on a lab coat once I was inside and pulled on some gloves I wanted every crystal so I was going in prepared. I shuffled in the lab and peeked in the evidence room. Everything seemed to be getting into shape. There were only a few boxes lying around. I went back in the lab and then checked to see if the coast was clear. So far I had not come across anyone. I opened the glass cabinet I usually kept the samples in I looked for the Petri dish of the sample I had labeled. I was scanning the samples frantically when someone spoke behind me. “I didn’t expect you back so soon,” it rang. I turned and stared at Max. “Hey,” I said, “I just couldn’t help myself you know...” I dragged off. “Me of course I know about Caithy’s work obsession,” he replied. “Shut up,” I said and turned back to the cabinet. I did not want anyone here and having max here made me want to get the drug faster and run away from the room.

“What are you looking for?” He asked. I sighed. “You remember the bottle that went missing I had taken a sample from it and forgotten so I wanted to do the tests as soon as I could,” I said. His eyes widened a bit and I knew what that meant. “You are going to kill me,” He said. “What?” I asked. “Caithy I didn’t know what it was you should have told me I was in here the other day and I tool up a sample but it fell when I was testing it,” he finished. “What,” I gasped. “Max please tell me you didn’t,” I begged. He shook his head and looked at me. I gulped and leaned back unto the counter. This was it then, I had a crazed stalker ex friend who was after me and I had no remedy. “Got cha,” He said. My eyes widened and I saw him staring at me with a big smile on his face.

“What?” I asked confused. He moved past me and reached for the top shelf. “I knew you took a sample to test so I put it up here so when you came back you could finish the tests,” He said. A great sigh escaped my lips and I felt like punching no hugging Max. Even if he had played that joke. I wanted to hug him instead I took the Petri dish and glared at him. “I’m sorry ok,” he said. “You...” I called. “Hey,” he cried and dodged past my arm and out the door. “I said I was sorry,” he said and then ran off. I shook my head and looked at the Petri dish. “Thank you,” I muttered and then looked for a bottle to put it in. I found a small glass vial that we usually took liquids with and emptied the crystals carefully into it. I sighed when I was done and then washed my hands. I did not want anymore of this stuff dropping on me.

I took off my lab coat and then pushed the bottle in my pocket. The station seemed empty today but I was glad. I made it past the doors and the front desk before I met Max coming through the door with a latte in his hand. “Where are you off to?” he asked. “I don’t feel so good I think I may take those days the investigator arranged for me,” I said. He smiled and nodded. “Yeah don’t forget to kiss him hi for me,” he said. I blushed and swatted his arm. “Bye,” I said and headed for the door. I looked back to make sure he was gone and then made my way to the car. It was really dark now and I was surprised I didn’t ask for the time before I went in. I slipped in the passenger seat and then let out a sigh. “I got it,’ I said. Paulo started the car immediately and then roared off.

I was secretly thanking the heavens for giving me the sample. I lay back and then stared out the window. The buildings zoomed past. We drove on until I saw the gas station and realized we were sort of close to the sanctuary. It pleased me to know that I was finally going to be free of Erid’s crazy stalker attitude. The drive was longer than I expected, I wanted to reach the church as soon as possible I wanted to. “Hey this is not the way we came from,” I said as Paulo made a sharp turn in the road. “Hey,” I called. “Where are you taking me?” I cried.
