Hopeful undertones
often go undetected by me,
recently the shadows
of the day have become
my only friends
as wars wage behind
my veiled mind.
Behind my eyelids
are islands,
islands you will never see
with blood-thirsty lions
who prey upon my thoughts:
I am defenseless.
These lions keep me awake
at the most inhumane hours,
they prey on my deepest thoughts
and I know that I can fight,
but all hope has drained out of me.
Everyday seems dismal,
showers of pouring rain
fall down on me,
and I'm sorry that I'm not okay
because I know this isn't
what you want,
but I have to kill my mind
so you live on without me.
Hopeful undertones
often go undetected by me,
but I felt hope for you:
feelings that never leave
as these lions remain,
and I might not have been what you needed
but I could have at least tried.
I'm sorry for failing you,
but these blood-thirsty lions
have devoured every ounce
of hope and will that I had left.
