AAYAT'S POV:
its already been one month since i got engaged and i'll be getting married in a few days. its just too overwhelming. everything happened soo fast. it's not that i am being forced into this marriage or its happening against my wishes, but the thought of leaving behind the people i love makes it so hard. here i am sitting all ready for my haldi while all the others are preparing for the function. there's chaos around me everywhere. all the people busy in different types of work, but my eyes were scanning for that one figure for whom i could do anything. that is when i spotted him. my first love. MY BABA.
just a look at him and i realize that just in a few days, seeing him everyday won't be in my routine anymore. that thought alone makes me want to burst out crying. i just wanted to spend as much time as possible with him. he was talking to a guest, but all i could think about is how badly i want him by my side. how badly i want to lean my head on his shoulder and feel the safety that i felt nowhere else. just like telepathy, he suddenly turned towards me. he started walking towards me with a soft smile on his face. he can fool the whole world with that smile and happy facade he's put on. but i can clearly see the sadness lining his eyes. he reached beside me and took a seat.
i couldn't resist and rested my head on his shoulder followed by a long, relived and a contented sigh. we both sat like that for a few minutes in a comfortable silence. the silence between us spoke about a lot of things which couldn't be expressed verbally, i could feel my baba being both strong and vulnerable, happy and sad at the same side. i was lost in my own thoughts when he called my name.
BABA: aayat mera baccha. chodke chali jaayegi mujhe kuch dino mei. itni badi kaise hogayi tu? aisa lagta hai jaise kal hi tere school ka pehla din tha.
(aayat my child. you'll leave me in a few days. when did you grow up so much? it feels like yesterday when it was your first day of school.)
AAYAT: aaj bhi kahan badi hui hu baba. aaj bhi toh aapki bacchi hi hu. aur hamesha rahungi.
(i am not a grown up today as well baba. i am still your little daughter and i will always be your little daughter.)
BABA: aayat bete, don't ever think that baba got you married to get rid of you or you were a burden to me. you are the most precious thing i've ever had my love.
asim ko maine dekha hai mere bacche. bohot accha ladka hai. uski aankhon mei mujhe sacchai dikhti hai. usme woh junoon dikhta hai mujhe. koi yeh baat maane ya na maane, lekin beta.. mai itna zarur kahunga ki asim tumhaara bohot acche se khayal rakhega. mujhse bhi accha. woh tumhe bhot khush rakhega mere bete.. kahin wahan jaake apne iss boodhe baba ko bhool matt jaana. aakhir tumhaare alawa mera hai hi kon?
(i've seen asim, my child. he's a great guy. i see the truth in his eyes. i see that passion. no matter if people believe me or not, but beta.. i can assure you that asim will take very good care of you. he'll treat you better than i have ever treated you. he'll keep you very happy. my child, don't forget this old father of yours after going there. in the end, you are the only one i have.)
AAYAT: aapse accha mera khayal koi nahi rakhsakta baba. aap jaisa koi nai hosakta. aur kya boodhe baba haan? kisise bhi puchiye, kisi jawan ladke se kam nahi lagte aap. aur agar amma ne sunliya na ki aapka mere alawa aur koi nahi, toh phir haldi chodiya, mirch se aapke chehre ki chamak badhayegi woh.
(no one can treat me better than you dad. no one can be like you. and what do you mean old father huh? ask anyone if you want, you don't look any less than a young lad. and if mom listens to you telling that you have no one else except me.. then forget the turmeric paste, she'll make your face glow with chilli powder.)
BABA: yahi toh baat hai na beta. tere jaane ke baad kon bachayega teri maa se mujhe? woh toh pakode bhi nai degi.
(that's the matter beta. who'll save me from your mom's wrath after you're gone? she won't even give me pakodas.)
AAYAT: arre baba, mai konsa saat samudra paar jaa rahin hu. jab bhi amma aapko pareshaan kare aap bas mujhe ek phone kardena, mai aapko bachane aajaungi, aur saathme pakode bhi leke aaya karungi!
(oh baba, i am not going anywhere far from here. whenever mom troubles you i am just a call away. i'll come and save you and i'll get the pakodas too!)
BABA: tum betiyan bhi ajeeb hi ho. saari zindagi bina kisi takleef ke, bina koi pareshaani diye badi hojaati ho aur pata bhi nahi chalta. lekin jis din sasuraal jaati ho, zindagi bhar ka dukh ek saath de jaati ho. baba loves you aayat beta, never doubt that.
(you daughters are really something. all your life you give us no troubles and grow up just like that. but when you get married and leave, you give a whole lifetime's worth sadness and leave.)
AAYAT: i love you too baba. i love you the most.
we were in our own world when we heard my mother shouting.
AMMA: arre aap yahan baithe hai? shaadi ka ghar hai aur aap ladki ke baap hai. aise thodi chalta hai. hatiya aap jaaiye mehmaano se baat kijiye.. waise bhi isko haldi lagne waali hai abb.
(you're sitting here? its your daughter's marriage and you're the bride's father! it doesn't work like this. go and talk to the guests. anyhow we're starting the ceremony now.)
BABA: beta tu na mujhe apne saath le chal. yeh aurat maardegi mujhe.
(beta you take me with you. this woman will kill me.)
AAYAT: baba, we both know.. you can't live without amma. now go soon before she comes again.
BABA: yeah you're right. i want to be able to stand and watch you getting married. wheel chairs are costly these days.
saying this baba went away. i was feeling at peace now. this is the power my father had on me. just his presence was enough to calm me down.
AMMA: chalo let's start the haldi ceremony.
everyone applied haldi on me one by one until only my crazy friends were left.
just by looking at there mischievous smile i could tell what was going on in there mind.
AAYAT: i am warning you.. don't you guys dare..!
ADITI: arre the fun has just begun. you won't be a bachelor anymore in a few days. let's have some fun.
SAMAIRA: totally agreed partner..!
AARNA: oh c'mon aayat, little bit of fun.
AAYAT: i don't trust you gu- aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
they just threw the haldi on my face and start rubbing it all over my arms and legs. i was looking like a minion..!
AAYAT: you guys i won't spare you!
saying this i also started throwing haldi on them and now we all were looking like minions lol!
we enjoyed our time laughing and giggling. just living in the moment. i was wearing a simple anarkali suit but with a grand dupatta paired with flower jewellery. they said i was the bride so i had to stand out. yeah and after being drenched in haldi i was definately standing out.
(aayat's look)
we were in our own little world when amma interrupted us.
AMMA: ok girls enough of your fun. now go clean yourself. we still need to get ready for mehndi. aayat needs to get ready too.
GIRLS: okaayyyyy auntyyy.
time skip
MEHNDI.
i wore a light weight sharara in the perfect green color for the mehndi function. mehndi holds a lot of significance in our indian culture. the bride's mehndi is supposed to be the most grand and attractive.
but damn it's painful at the same time. you'll have to sit there like a statue for hours together..!
just thinking about it made my feet go cold. i don't even know what i am going to do when i have to sit there all geared.
just as i was in my thoughts, amma called me.
AMMA: aayat beta aaja lagwaale mehndi. teri mehndi sabse zyada time legi.
(aayat beta you get your henna done first. yours will take the most time.)
AAYAT: yes amma.
i just sat there when the artists started applying mehndi.
its been freaking half an hour and only half of my first hand is done. i'll cry if this doesn't go any faster. where are those useless friends of mine? there's no entertainment here..!!
i think god accepted my request after seeing me struggling here. i saw aditi and samaira approaching me smiling.
ADITI: samaiiraaaaaaaaa.. you know i heard that aayat's mehndi has speciallyyyyy come from asim's side. they have a ritual where the bride's mehndi must come from the groom's side..
she said in a teasing tone.
i gave her an uninterested look when i heard samaira saying something.
SAMAIRA: arree didi where are you writing our jiju's name on our bride's hand?? chupaa ki likhnaa.. saari raat naam dhoondne mei hi nikal jaani chahiye.
(write it in such a way that the whole night is spent in looking for his name on her hand.)
AAYAT: bhaago tum dono yahan se.. ek toh meri kamar kab tootegi koi idea nahi hai aur tumhe chidhaana alag hai mujhe. laga tha kuch entertainment hoga mera. tum dono ko kaam bigaadna aata hai bas.
(get lost you guys. i have no idea when my back is going to break here and you guys want to tease me. i thought i'll get some nice entertainment here but you guys only know how to ruin my mood.)
SAMAIRA: arree meri maa entertainment chahiye na tujhe. toh sun mai batati hu mere dj event pe kya hua.
(you want entertainment right. then listen, i'll tell you what happened at the dj event.)
saything this she started narrating the whole scene.
once she stopped speaking me and aditi bursted out laughing. damn this girl. that guy will have nightmares for sure.
just sitting here and laughing like idiots with these crackheads and giving mehndi waali didi a hard time as i was shaking too bad while laughing...
my mehndi was finally done after three freaking hours. and damn it looked beautiful. asim's name was hidden in such a way that if was difficult for me also to look for it. but its fine. let him work a little hard.
i was in my thoughts when amma came there and gasped.
AMMA: its so beautiful. aayat bete your mehndi is soo good.
AAYAT: thank you amma.
AMMA: you're welcome dear. don't even try removing this before 4 hours. warna rang nahi chadhega.
(the colour won't be deep enough then.)
after 4 hours. finally i removed the mehndi.
ADITI: arree dekho toh.. kya gehra rang chadha hai.. iska matlab jeeju toh flat hi hai tujhpe. arreee itna pyaar aayat mai toh pighal jaaungi.
(arre look at this. the color of the henna is soo deep. that means our brother in law is completely whipped. oh my god soo much love aayat i am melting!)
SAMAIRA: bolte toh hai ki jitna gehra rang utna zyada pyaar.. aayat teri toh kaali hi hojayegi kal tak. pyaar toh bohot milega lagta hai tujhe.
(they say the deeper the color deeper is the love. aayat your's will turn black by tomorrow. you'll receive a lot of love i guess.)
AAYAT: shut up you both.
AMMA: aayat mehndi ka rang toh gehra aaya hai.. khush rahegi matlab.
(the henna's color is deep. that means you'll be happy.)
after listening to them all i could i think about was him. my life with him. will he really love me that much?? will i be happy with him.
i felt confident again. i know i'll be happy with him.
just two more days and i am going to me mrs. asim aman.
