"Don't you think it's ridiculous?"
You pay no attention to the voice coming up behind you. You never liked what she had to say. Her words always made you doubt everything about your feelings for Ririka.
"What is it this time, Kirari?"
"About you having feelings for my older sister. She'll never bat an eye over someone like you. She seems to already have eyes for someone else."
You sigh when you noticed Ririka searching the room for someone. You knew it wasn't you because she simply gave you a small smile and continue her searched. You kept your eyes on her until her smile widened. Following her line of sight, you were disappointed to find Mary.
"The two of you barely even tolerate each other. You don't know anything about her."
"I know enough. You're a fool to think she'll like you. You really think someone like Ririka would even give you the time of day?"
You weren't sure why you were even humoring Kirari. Perhaps, it was because you hoped she will help kill any feelings you had for Ririka. You knew Kirari was right but your heart refused to listen. It still continued to beat fast whenever Ririka was around.
"She's my friend."
"Is she?"
No longer able to stand her, you turned around to walk out of the room. When you're gone, Kirari looks over to her sister. As expected, Ririka seemed much happier with Mary at her side. While she wasn't a fan of Mary's, she could tolerate her. She couldn't stand you and she was going to do anything she could to prevent the two of you from even being friends.
X
You're in the dining hall, going over some last minute notes for a test when Kirari takes a seat in front of you.
"I don't remember allowing you to sit."
"It's a public area. Anyone is allowed to sit wherever they wish."
Already stressed over your exam, you didn't need to deal with Kirari's bullshit. You hurry to grab your things to leave the area.
"Why don't you stay? Let's play a game." You stop clearing your spot and sit back down. "Something easy that you would even understand. Twenty questions. You can ask me whatever you want and I'll answer truthfully. The same applies to you."
You ignore her insult as you think about her proposal. There were plenty of things you wanted to ask her but you weren't sure if you would want to answer her questions. In the end, the need for answers won.
"Fine. I'll play your stupid game."
She gives you a small smile.
"I knew you were smart. Sayaka, please get us some tea." Sayaka excuses herself and the game begins. "I'll let you go first as a faith of goodwill."
You refrained from rolling your eyes at her words.
"And you'll answer truthfully?" Kirari nods. "How will I know that you're not lying?"
"I guess you're just going to have to trust me. Just like I'll have to trust what you say."
Satisfied with her response, you nod.
"Alright. Ririka and Mary, are they dating?"
"No."
"What? That's it? Just no?"
Just then, Sayaka returns with the tea. She pours the two of you a cup and then moves to stand by Kirari's side. Kirari takes a sip and lets out a sigh of content at the taste.
"I answered your question. That satisfies out terms. Has Ririka told you about her life plan?"
You didn't even have to answer the question for Kirari to know your answer. Your shocked expression let her know that you weren't aware.
"No. She has a life plan?"
"Oh my. It seems like your best friend has not been entirely honest. She has a life plan. Do you plan on telling her how you feel?"
"Wait, that's not fair. That wasn't my question!"
At your outburst, Sayaka immediately pulls out her taser and turns it on for a second. You apologize for your lack of control and sit back down.
"It's alright, Sayaka. She wouldn't hurt a fly. You phrased it as a question so it counted." You glared at her, hating how she was right. "Now answer my question."
"No. I don't plan to confess. What is in her life plan?"
"The usual. Who is she to marry, how many kids she'll have, what she'll take over when we graduate. Every Bami has expectations. Why stick around when you know that Ririka will never feel the same?"
You're surprised to hear Kirari's answer. You had no idea of the Bami's having life plans. You've only ever heard of people earning them after earning so much debt.
"I'd rather be her friend than not have her in my life. Why do the Bami's have a life plan?"
"The elders like to make sure our clan continues for centuries. With every new Bami heir, they expect for the clan to grow. Each Bami has a duty to make the clan's power grow. This is done through life plans. Who they marry is based on what the marriage can provide to the clan. Whether it's connections or money. The number of kids is self explanatory. They need to make sure that each family produces an heir. Without heirs, family names will disappear. As for what they'll take over, they need to contribute to the family business. We can't trust outsiders to make decisions in favor of the clan. You really think Ririka considers you a friend?"
"Ririka is my friend."
"You might be her friend but is she yours? From what I've seen and hear, Ririka only comes to you when she needs something or Mary ditches her. You're her second choice."
"Y...you're wrong. We're best friends."
Kirari chuckles over seeing how confused you looked.
"If I were you. I'd rethink my friendship. You're only going to get hurt if you continued being friends with her. She doesn't see you as a friend and she'll never return your feelings. Thank you for playing. We should continue some other time. We still have some questions left over."
With that said, Kirari leaves with Sayaka. Alone, you let out a quiet sob as you start to rethink all your interactions with Ririka. In the end, you had to admit that Kirari was right. Ririka had always seen you as a second choice.
X
Ririka is worried sick about you. You've been avoiding her for over a week. Calls and messages went unanswered. She barely saw you in school and if she did, it was only for a few seconds.
"Is something wrong, sister?"
"I'm worried about (y/n). She's been avoiding me and I'm not sure why. I racked my brain to think of something that I could've done but come up blank."
"How strange. That seems unusual. She's always annoyingly been attached to your hip since the two of you became friends."
Ririka lets out a tired sigh as she nods.
"I know. I never realized just how much I appreciated her company. She always brightened my day."
"If I didn't know any better. It almost sounds to me like you've taken a liking to a particular someone."
Ririka doesn't bother to hide her pink cheeks.
"Is it that obvious?"
"You've never been good at hiding things, sister."
The way Ririka spoke about you made Kirari rethink her choices. It was surprising to hear that Ririka actually liked you. Everything that she had observed pointed to the fact that Ririka liked Mary. Nevertheless, her sister couldn't be with someone like you. You weren't of an affluential family nor did you possess qualities that could help the clan grow. You were a nobody that the elders of the clan will never approve.
"I should probably visit her. I need to find out what's going on."
"Let her be, Ririka. I'm sure she'll come to explain everything."
It took a while but eventually Kirari managed to convince Ririka to wait. Now that she had finally pushed you away, she had to keep Ririka away.
As clan leader, it was up to her to make sure that the clan continues being successful.
