"She tried her best not to look back, but she did."

There she was. The girl looking for a new beginning was now replaced by a woman sitting by her daughter's bed, hoping for a miracle that she knew wasn't coming.
How far has she gone?
The girl's scared smile that she had on her face the first time she walked through the doors of this hospital, was now replaced by hundreds of sobs, escaping her lips every few seconds.
How did she get here?
"Hey, you alright?" I heard a murmur come from behind me. When I turned around, I saw Meredith standing there, her eyes gleaming with nothing but pity. She slowly made her way next to me, then took a chair from nearby and sat down, laying her head on my shoulder. Meredith's way of showing that she's there for me in every way.
"They are still running tests, but it's definitely leukemia." I got out. The name sent nothing but shivers down my whole body. I still couldn't composite what was happening, even after multiple hours. How could such a wonderful and amazing little girl get cancer, how was that impossible?
"What's your plan, Malia?" Meredith asked the important question, the one that I had been dealing with in my mind for the past few hours. What was I going to do?
Just as I was about to answer Meredith's question with a simple I don't know, Derek came inside, his eyes showed one last shred of hope, and that was all I needed, all I needed to keep going. "What is it?" my eyes lit up immediately.
"I called one of my old co-workers at the practice." Derek started while trying to catch his breath. Suddenly a chuckle escaped his lips, that was it, that was my light in this dark tunnel. "He'll do the treatment, he agreed."
I couldn't help but jump up and down. Instantly I ran towards Derek and wrapped my hands around his neck, the happiness I felt couldn't be explained in words, and soon after Meredith joined in the hug, her lips in the same smile that I and Derek had.
"Mom..." a weak voice said. I turned around to see Scarlett, her eyes slowly fluttering open. I didn't even realize what she had called me, but truth to be told, that wasn't the most important thing right now. The important thing is that she was awake.
"Scar," I said, my voice full of relief, I then rushed back to her and took her hand. "You're going to be alright, we found someone who'll fix you up, monkey." I couldn't help but start to cry again, this time tears of happiness.
"Don't cry, mom." Scarlett quietly got out. "You are embarrassing me." she tried to lighten up the mood, and it worked. I laughed, I laughed the best laugh I had laughed in all of my life, to be honest.
"Shh, save your strength," I ordered her and she stayed quiet. Moments later Addison and Richard had joined in on the news, and soon the room was filled with Izzie, Cristina, Miranda, George, Callie, Alex, and Mark.
Mark walked up to me and slid his hand in mine, not caring about the crowd behind us, and truth to be told I didn't either, I was too happy to.
"Guys, I would do anything for my family, and this hospital, you guys, you are my family." I started while looking over at all of them. I could see that Miranda had defiantly been crying, and even a glitter of tear danced around in Cristina's eyes, the same went for Richard. "And I don't know where I would be right now if it weren't for all of you guys." I gave a lovely and heartfelt smile to Richard.
"I'd like to thank you all for that." I squeezed Mark's hand. "And that's why this is so hard, but-" I knew that all of them already knew what was happening here. "Saying goodbye to all of you will be the hardest thing I will ever do in my life."
I let go of Mark's hand and went up to Derek. "Hug me, dumbass." I snickered and welcomed him in a bear hug, next followed Meredith.
"I love you," she assured, one single tear running down her cheek. I smiled and wrapped my hands around her.
"Always and forever." I whispered in her ear and left to wrap my arms around Miranda. "tell Tuck that his auntie Malia loves him." I told her and felt her nod. Next followed all of the interns. "Watch out for Meredith, will you?" I said to all of them, and with one last chuckle they nodded.
I walked up to Addison. "I'll visit you the first chance I get." was the first thing she said. I smiled and hugged her.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
And last was Richard. "You'll have no idea how much I'll miss you, little one," he said, his always welcoming smile on his face. If this man had any idea how much he meant to me.
"We've parted ways before, don't worry, we'll see each other, this isn't goodbye for us," I assured him and hugged him. "But promise me I'll still be chief of neuro when I return." I heard everyone in the room laugh at my remark. It felt good to laugh with the people I love the most one last time.
After everyone left the room, Mark got Scarlett out of her bed and took my hand, leading me away from the room and out of the hospital. "Mark, what are you doing, she's not strong enough." I hissed at him as he took out his car keys and unlocked his car.
"She'll be for this." is all he said before helping Scarlett getting in the car and opening the front car doors for me. With a confused look, I decided to play along and got into the car. Soon after he started the car and drove off somewhere.
"Don't worry, I'm not kidnapping you." lightly chuckled Mark, and a moment later I knew exactly where he was taking the two of us.
"Are you seriously taking us to the ice cream cafe?" I couldn't help but smile at how wonderful this man really was. And as much as I wanted him to just leave with me, I knew that he had a life here, and taking that away is something I would never want to do.
"Yeah, it's the spot of our first date," replied Mark, I raised my eyebrow at him.
"No, our first date was at Joe's, you probably don't remember." I reminded him, but he didn't give in that easily.
"No, that was the place I asked you to have sex with me, but you just peaked my lips and left-"
"Hello, I'm still here, remember, not dead yet." joked Scarlett in an annoying way. I eyed Mark and all three of us started to laugh.
"But, technically it was at Joe's, that was when our eyes first meant, there were fireworks, it was the first time Malia Grey looked into the eyes of the one and only Mark Sloan." I portrayed a dreamy voice as I spoke as if I was a narrator who was reading a princess love story to children, and that made all three of us laugh harder.
"Gosh, you've got no idea how much I love you." when the words escaped Mark's mouth the car went into silence. Suddenly Mark stopped the car and when I looked behind him I saw the ice cream cafe.
"Okay, I'm going to leave now." Scarlett awkwardly mumbled, and after realizing that she had enough strength to walk she was out of the car.
I coughed, not knowing what to say right at this moment. Then, Mark left the car and made me do the same, he walked up to me and looked me up and down. "And this was the moment Mark Sloan looked into the eyes of the one and only Malia Grey." he changed up my words and said. "The woman he loves." he continued. Suddenly I couldn't breathe, or at least I thought I couldn't. "And if this was the last time he'll do it, he will sure as hell kiss her right after." and not waiting for any approval he leaned in and caught my lips.
A moment later we let go to catch our breaths. "But you don't have to say it back, I will completely understand-"
"I love you too." I interrupted, and after realizing what I had just said Mark pulled me in again, smiling like a teenage boy.
"Okay Scar, you ready?" I took her hand and looked down at her, we were just about to get into the plane.
"Sure, I would love to stay here, you know, but I kind of wanna live and stuff." Scarlett joked around, making me laugh, and after giving our plane tickets to the manager we left. And as much as I wanted to look back, I knew I couldn't. I was doing this for my daughter.
But little did I know, I in fact will be looking back.
a/n: don't mind me, I'm just up here crying about this chapter and that the journey is at its end. From one side I am grateful it is, but from another point, I'll miss Scar's humor and the way Malia lit up my day, but everything runs its course so here we are.
the song at the top is a song that really reminds me of Malia and Mark :) so sad their love story ended here, but who knows-...maybe it's coming back.
Anyway, thanks for being here with me, I know that the ending was sudden, but as you may know, I am dealing with stuff in my own life, and thinking about not updating and worrying about this book was getting on my nerves a little bit.
Anyways, love you guys the same way Malia loves Meredith.
