Unexpectedly

Christine Summer

Walking down the street with a made up mind,

Looking on, didn’t expect that I’ll find,

Someone like you, written all over, fine,

Just look my way and I will make you mine.

I gave up with love five months ago,

But with you I could just come and go,

You are making me wanting to know,

Can I ever let this feelings grow?

You go ahead and ask my name,

As if I could wallow in fame,

With just four words you made my heart tamed,

I just hope I didn’t make you think I’m lame.

You’ll ask me out for coffee eventually,

And I wonder if I could ask for tea,

Caffeine could do more harm for me,

Because staring at you made me giddy.

You sat next to me on the table,

Speaking was next to improbable,

Electricity runs through me like a cable,

Sparks flew instantly, incredible.

You think I’m funny when I say,

That you are like the first of May,

And I laugh because I don’t want to cry,

This is so amazing, feeling like I could try.

I don’t believe in love at first sight,

Because for it, you need an insight,

But with you I’m having a foresight,

That happily ever after is just right.

We talk for hours like we had nothing to do,

Six hours and all I did was stare at you,

I’m captivated; your eyes are blue,

Tell me you feel the same way too.

I’m so caught up I forgot to ask,

Do you have time until dusk?

With your eyes I could bask,

Tearing my gaze would be a task.

You stand up; it’s time to go,

My heart screams, don’t go,

Your face says, I know,

You’re making it look like a show.

We walk out and beside each other silent,

Words unspoken but it doesn’t feel so quiet,

My heart is pounding like a racket,

And you dug your hands on your pocket.

We round up a corner and I wait for good-bye,

I smile but my eyes could never lie,

That I didn’t notice eight hours had gone by,

Talking to you felt like I could fly.

Instead you say, see you later,

And I smile because this is better,

Goodbyes sound so bitter,

I wish I could ask for your number.

I turn around expecting that was it,

When you ask for mine, like it was a habit,

To make me wait but get on with it,

My heart is foolishly jumping up like a rabbit.

And I’d say goodnight to you,

You smiled and said goodnight to you too,

You left and acted like you do,

You glanced back and shout, it was nice meeting you.

The next thing I know you were in my dream,

We were on the beach like in the films,

Nothing looks like it seems,

Maybe the next time wouldn’t be dream.

I have hopes.
