Chapter Sixty Two

Start from the beginning

You looked around the square, at the stubborn and resolute faces. The fear was gone, as if they had come to some sort of enlightenment. Just like you had.

"You have murdered us. But that doesn't make us weaker." I took a step toward Fox, despite her warnings. No one moved. You took another step.

"You have taken our children, our brothers and sisters. Treated us like replaceable pawns. But that doesn't make us lesser." You were now inches from Fox and you stared her down- looked down at her despite your similar heights.

"Our scars are our trophies. We have lost everything. There is nothing left to lose." You smiled as you could sense the Council coming to the realization of what you were saying. "You threaten us with death? Please, we've been waiting for it since we were born." You practically spat at Fox.

She trembled, probably in anger. "Kill them."

The Council members turned to face the masses. This time, the people did not shy away. They stood their ground.

You smiled something wicked at Fox. "Just try and kill us. I dare you."

These people.

You were proud of them.

You loved them.

And you felt hope for them.

Something buzzed through the air, but it didn't come from the woman in the panther's mask. It came from you.

"We are shadows. We are everywhere."

Fox backed away from you in sudden fear. "No..."

Fuyu did the same, pulling her mask off and letting it drop to the ground. Her eyes were wide in utter shock. "Hikari-"

She didn't have time to finish as you combusted.

*~*

You opened your eyes, finding yourself lying on the ground near the platform.

All around you people were crouching, covering their faces and eyes.

You blinked the sun out of your eyes.

Sun.

You looked up, finding the sky a thousand shades of blue, crimson, and gold. A bright disc was setting in the west, allowing its brilliance to make one final show. The darkness... it was gone.

Fuyu swayed to her feet beside you. She seemed to be in a daze.

Fox was on the ground, groaning in pain. "My eyes..."

People began to recover, looking around in confusion.

What just happened?

"You..." Fuyu started.

You turned to face her and she fell to her knees. "You did it..."

"Did what?" You asked her in confusion. She just stared at you in awe, as if she couldn't believe that what she had witnessed was real.

Fox rose to her feet, looking between you and Fuyu. "You... think you won... with..." She stumbled a bit before regaining her balance. "You think you... won with... that silly stunt?"

You were still very confused. "I-"

"You'll... pay for this..." A knife slipped into her hand. She snapped her fingers.

The rest of the Council had recovered as well, weapons now at the ready.

"Kill them all."

Your eyes widened in surprise. "No-"

But it was too late.

The screams began and the blood sprayed. It was déjà vu...

"No, no, no..." You couldn't take it, couldn't handle it again. You bent down, curling into yourself again, hands clutching your head. "Not again..." You stayed like that for who knew how long, eyes squeezed shut.

Then the screaming stopped, replaced with cries of anger and protest. You went still. Were... they all dead?

Footsteps neared you and stopped.

You didn't dare look up.

"Sensei, you okay?"

Your heart did a back flip at the familiarity in that voice. No... it couldn't be...

Slowly, you raised your head, eyes slowly traveling to the person in front of you.

You let out a wracking sob.

Sasuke bent down to your level and offered you a hand. He smiled, but tears glistened in his dark eyes. "Come with me, (Y/N)-sensei."
