Chapter Sixty Two

Start from the beginning

"Ten."

Your people. She was going to kill your people.

"Nine."

Haru's people, the ones you promised you would save.

"Eight."

The rebels' people. Their friends and families who they were willing to die for.

"Seven."

The innocent. Children, families, everyone would suffer.

"Six."

And all for the Council's entertainment. That's what all of this was: the Council's way to exhibit control. F*cking sadists, the whole lot of them.

"Five."

The innocent would die.

All your fault.

"Four."

It was all your fault. And you knew it.

So do something about it.

What?

"Three."

All your fault. All your responsibility. Right the wrong. If you brought this upon your people, you can bring them out of it as well.

I can?

Remember. You are...

"Two."

I am.

"One."

"No."

Fox held up her hand, stopping the Council from attacking. She looked up at you. "What? Have something to say, Phantom?"

You tried to stand up but your legs were too weak. You tried again, not taking no for an answer. You would rise.

"I said no."

Fox laughed. "You are in no position to tell me what to do. And I mean, what can you possibly do to stop us?" She gestured to the Council members around her. "We are invincible!"

You shook your head. "You are not."

The small Council member stopped laughing. "What're you going to do about it? These are my people. I can do whatever I want to them."

You felt your vision go red as rage raced through your veins, giving you a newfound strength. "No. They are not your people."

They were Haru's, and Taeru's, and Ichirou's. They were yours. And-

You love them.

A tear ran down your cheek.

"I-" You glanced around the square, at the hundreds of faces, all watching you and the Council in utter terror. You didn't want them to be so afraid, they deserved better. You wanted them to be happy. To be safe. To be free.

You wiped the tear away. "They are not your people. They never have been." You looked up at Fox who still seemed entertained by your sudden gusto.

"Oh really? Are they yours? If so, why don't you just save them? If you're so fit to rule them, why don't you just overthrow us and do what Kana Kuraimura never could. Become Yamikage!" She threw her hands in the air, her laughing beginning again but this time more hysterical. "Just try, Phantom. I dare you."

You shook uncontrollably. But just like Taeru, it wasn't out of fear. "You can silence us." You took a step toward the edge of the platform. "And kill us." You reached the edge. "And torture us into submission." You jumped down to the second tier.
