Susan was back that afternoon.

"Have you found out anything about my husband?"

"Nope. Nada. Zilch." I put out my cigarette in the ashtray. "No one's telling me anything. This whole thing stinks."

"You seem quite frustrated."

"You're damn right I'm frustrated!" I pointed at her. "People are hiding something from me, and I wanna know what."

"You think this has something to do with Jeff?"

"Honey, I'm sure of it."

"Well, what can we do now? The case is closed, right?"

"Closed doesn't mean forgotten. Listen, why don't I stop by your house tonight? I wanna make sure I didn't miss anything."

"Why, yes, of course. My shift ends at 4 am. I should be ready to receive you by 5."

"Five it is, then." We clinked our glasses together. I drained mine.
