The chief was pacing back and forth when I came into his office. "What do you want?"

"I was just here about the Jeffrey O'Brien case."

"The suicide? That case is closed."

"Well, a new lead showed up." I told him what Susan had told me.

The chief stopped and gulped. Suddenly he got all fidgety. "Dames say all kinds of things. Maybe she really saw it. It doesn't matter. We have it on good authority that it was a suicide."

"And whose authority is that?"

He leaned in and pointed at me. "Now, see here! I am way too busy to be worrying about something that's already been solved. If you like your badge, you would do well to keep out of this. Understood?"

"Yes, boss." He was hiding something. I just knew it.
