Another Concussion

The worst damage inflicted to my body is a mild concussion. I have a gash on the inside of my cheek from where my teeth connected with the soft flesh. Surprisingly, I have no organ damage from the blow to my stomach. According to the doctor, I will have some nasty bruises on my hip.

Someone pulls back the curtain. A flustered Andy looks at me, then at Brayden. She rushes to her son, pulling him in for a tight hug. She directs her question at me as she asks it.

"What happened?!"

"Turns out Daniel is my cousin."

Her face wrinkles to confusion.

"What do you mean?"

"Daniel's uncle is my father."

Her face morphs to realization and sympathy. Andy knows what I went through. Every horrific detail.

"Oh my gosh, Skye! I'm so sorry!"

She doesn't let go of her son. I don't blame her. He just witnessed something that no child should have to see.

"He said he's been looking for me since I left. He beat me and Brayden saved me."

Brayden chimes in. I already discussed with him that he did everything right and is my hero.

"I called 9-1-1 just like you showed me, Mommy!"

"Good job, sweet boy. You did great."

A doctor comes in with a clipboard in hand.

"We need to run a few more tests, Miss Knight. Is that okay?"

"Yes."

He writes something down, not looking up as he speaks again.

"I want to keep you for observation overnight just to make sure nothing new develops."

"Okay."

"A nurse will be in to escort you to your room."

"Thank you."

My third hospital visit in less than six months. Great.
