Lack Of Empathy

I mindlessly click through the TV stations. Nothing good is on. I settle on some crime drama and glance at the clock. I bolt upright in bed, ignoring the pain and dizzy spell that hits me.
"Maggie!"
Andy looks over at me, startled.
"What's wrong?!"
"I didn't call Hunter and inform him I've been in an accident! Nobody is there to pick up Maggie from daycare!"
"Okay. Relax. Why don't you call the daycare and then call him?"
"She isn't released for another ten minutes so I'll call Hunter first."
Without me even asking, Andy walks over to the chair where my purse is. She reaches in and pulls out my phone. She hands it to me and I dial Hunter's number. On the third ring, he picks up.
"This better be good if you are disturbing me at work, Knight."
Ever since I started working for him again five years ago, he's been cold and distant. I think he blames me for getting pregnant with his baby when, in reality, he was the one who wanted no protection. He didn't listen when I said we needed some. Hunter refused to deal with the consequences and continues to blame me to this day.
"I am unable to pick up the kids from daycare and Preschool today, Sir."
"And why is that?"
He doesn't bother hiding the venomous anger that poisons his voice and invades my ear.
"I got into an accident, Sir. A truck rear-ended me."
"So?"
"The van is wrecked, Sir."
He answers without missing a beat.
"Take the car and pick them up."
This dense man is getting on my nerves. The point is going right over his thick skull.
"I'm hospitalized with my injuries, Sir. I can't leave."
A sarcastic sigh comes from his end.
"Of course you are. I'll send someone to get them. When are you expected to get out of the hospital?"
"Tomorrow possibly."
He hangs up. He doesn't ask how I am or if I need anything. Nope. He just hung up. Frankly, I don't give a crap. This has been the same Hunter I've worked for since long before his kids were born. I didn't work for him for several months while I was pregnant, but other than that, he's been my employer. I'm used to his garbage attitude and narcissistic personality.
"Is he mad?"
"Hard to tell. His cold tone disguises any emotions."
Andy, who also worked for Hunter for an extended period of time, laughs.
"He hasn't changed one bit."
"Did you really expect him to change?"
"No. Not really. I just thought that he might show a sliver of emotion of care but apparently not."
Her phone starts buzzing. She pulls in out and swipes the screen.
"I have to go pick up Brayden from school. Need me to get you anything?"
"No thank you. Tell him I say hi."
"Will do."
She grabs her belongings, giving me a hug before she exits the hospital room.
