Avoiding The Inevitable

I exit the manager’s office at Grocery Guru and walk down the hall back to the main store. Of course, I spot Gavin speaking with one of the store clerks. He hasn’t texted or called, which is bothering me. All I did was say I wasn’t moving in just yet. He ignores me for that? Immature.
I quicken my pace, turning my head away from him so he doesn’t notice me as I pass. It doesn’t work.
“Skye! Wait up!”
I try to escape but his arm around my shoulders stops me.
“Hey, baby girl. Wait with me for a second.”
He continues to place his grocery order for the bar, looking at a little piece of paper with a bunch of things crossed out. Lemons, limes, cherries, pretzels, chips, and salt are the only things I can make out.
“They will be ready for pick-up tomorrow morning, sir.”
“Thanks, Millie. You’re the best.”
The clerk blushes and giggles. A strange wave of possessiveness washes over me.
“Let’s go babe. I’m supposed to meet Andy soon.”
The sparkle in Millie’s eye fades at the word ‘babe’.
That’s right, punk. He’s my man. Back off!
We start walking towards the doors, exiting the store.
“Jealous much?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
He stops me on the sidewalk, keeping a firm hold on my arm. I feel like I’m going to puke, but I focus on his words instead. I can’t have negative feelings about stuff like this. Maybe he’s into it. I need to keep an open mind with Gavin. He hasn’t hurt me physically so there is no reason he would right now. It’s all in my head.
“You’re the one who hasn’t contacted me, Skye. I’ve called, I’ve messaged, I even stopped by to see Daniel the other day and you were there. Now you are acting all jealous?”
“I didn’t get any of your calls or texts.”
He pulls out his phone. I get a glimpse of his background and smile. It’s me, sleeping peacefully on his bare chest.
Gavin turns the phone screen towards me when he pulls up our messages.
“See? I tried to text you and you never responded.”
At least a dozen messages fill the screen but next to each one is a small ‘x’ rather than a time they were delivered.
“They never sent.”
“What?”
He looks at the screen, confused for a second but then it hits him.
“Crap.”
He puts his phone away and takes my hand. We cross the street and he leads me to my truck.
“Please come back to my place, baby. I miss you. I was insensitive and acted like a complete child. Please come back and hang. We can watch movies and eat ice cream.”
I smile at his offer.
“Of course. I’ll meet you there.”
He places a kiss on my forehead before opening my truck door for me.
“I’ll see you there, beautiful.”
