A knock at the door startles me. Andy didn’t say anything about guests.
I cautiously approach the door.
“Who is it?”
No response. I open the door just enough to see who it is. Then I pull open the door the rest of the way, shocked. Gavin, in all his handsome glory, is standing on the front porch.
“Hey beautiful.”
Before I get the chance to do anything, little footsteps come up behind me.
“Uncle Gavin!”
“Hey, Brayden.”
Gavin crouches down and opens his arms. Brayden happily jumps into them. Gavin stands up and steps into the house. I close the door and stare at this attractive man holding Brayden. It’s the perfect sight. Gavin would make an amazing father.
Gavin puts Brayden down.
“What are you watching, kid?”
“Paw Patrol! Do you want to watch?”
“Sure. Let me just talk to Skye, okay?”
Brayden nods and runs back to the couch, climbing onto the cushions. Gavin guides me to the kitchen island. He pushes me against in, his arms on either side of my body, trapping me. He looks at me with a hungry gaze. I smirk back at him as I grab his face in my hands. I pull our lips together. His tongue battles against mine before I give in, letting him explore my mouth. The kiss quickly changes from a fast, desperate kiss to a slow and meaningful one.
Once I’m thoroughly breathless, he pulls back.
“Is Brayden yours?”
Does he know? Did Daniel tell him? Does Andy want him to know?
I play it off like I’m confused.
“What do you mean?”
Gavin lowers his voice to just above a whisper.
“I’m smarter than you think, Skye. Right around the time you were supposed to have your baby, Daniel tells me that he adopted a son. Now, I’ve seen you numerous times and not once have you mentioned the baby you had. So I’m going to ask once again, and I want the truth. Is Brayden your baby?”
I beat down the tears as I nod. Gavin wraps me in a tight hug, kissing my forehead.
“That was very generous of you, Skye. You made them overjoyed.”
“I know. I watched Andy raise him.”
I look over at the boy I delivered several years ago. He’s a precious little boy that has brought so much joy to Andy and Daniel. This makes me smile. I did the right thing. I’ve known that all along but this is further confirmation.
I look into Gavin’s eyes. Just as I start to lean in for a kiss, his phone starts ringing. He unwillingly looks at the screen.
“Crap.”
He swipes a finger across the screen and put the phone to his ear.
“What’s up?”
His face scrunches to confusion. In order to give him privacy with his call, I step away and join Brayden on the couch.
“Where is Uncle Gavin?”
“He’s on the phone. Just give him a minute.”
“Okay!”
He goes back to watch the cartoons happily. I can’t focus on the animated dogs. I listen for Gavin. I hear him end the call and his approaching footsteps.
He squats down in front of Brayden, a concerned look in his eyes.
“Sorry, kid. I have to leave to go help my brother. We can watch cartoons next time, okay?”
“Okay.”
He smiles and makes a fist, holding it out to Brayden.
“Fist-bump?”
Brayden slams his little fist against Gavin’s.
“Fireworks!”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, kid.”
“Bye Uncle Gavin!”
Gavin stands up, leaning down to kiss my forehead. I smile at his loving gesture.
“I’ll text you later, cutie.”
With those five words, he leaves, closing the door behind him.
