I smooth my hands over the blouse and khaki pants, taking one last look in the mirror. Andy helped me rehearse some commonly asked job interview questions last night, but I’m still nervous. I haven’t done this since I was 17.
“You can do this, Skye. You got this.”
I try to reassure myself in the mirror, but that doesn’t calm my nerves. Oh well. This can go two different ways. I can either get the job and a schedule of when I start training, or I crash and burn and try for another job. My resume is pathetically short. I participated in very few clubs in high school and didn’t receive any honors or medals. My previous jobs only include working for Hunter Scotch as a maid and nanny. I’m in my late twenties and this is how successful and accomplished I’ve become. Andy is around the same age and live lavishly with her husband and my son. She has a high school diploma, an Associate’s degree in business management, and is working towards her Bachelor’s degree. I have nothing.
These thoughts start to pull me down into the blackness in my mind the doctor told me to avoid. I run through the positive thought exercises the doctor discussed with me. List ten positive things about yourself, list five things that are good in your life, and take a deep breath. It takes a while to work, but I feel my inner Skye pulling herself away from the black. Once I complete the exercise, I smile in the mirror.
“Let’s do this.”
