Chapter 24: Pancake Wars

Lesedi

"Two sugars, two milk?" I asked Laura who was going through one of the food magazines I had left on the kitchen counter.

"One sugar, love - I'm trying to control my sweet intake.", she replied.

"Well, then I guess you won't be having a bite of the Guinness chocolate cake I made...?", I asked with a sly smile.

"Oh - make that no sugar and a slice of chocolate cake on the side, please", she replied eagerly.

"Good choice", I nodded as I added the milk and sugar proportions into the mugs before I strained in the tea. Aiden, just like me, liked his tea with two teaspoons of sugar. Logan, on the other hand, had something of a sweet tooth and always opted for three.

"What's for breakfast, Lessie? - I'm starving", Logan complained as he ransacked the fridge.

"Hmm...", I thought - "I really need to convince Aiden to buy an oven for his place", I pondered out loud.

"Or - you could move in - and bring your oven here with you...", Logan suggested, feigning innocence.

"You just want free food", I rolled my eyes.

"No - I want yummy, tasty, mouth-watering food - there's a difference.", he validated.

"No need to butter me up - it's not going to happen.", I replied nonchalantly.

"What's not going to happen?", Aiden asked curiously as he walked down the stairs.

"Nothing - ", I quickly blurted out.

"Right", he looked at me skeptically.

"What do you want for breakfast, love?", I asked while handing him his cup of tea, in hopes that he wouldn't realize my lame attempt at changing the subject.

He might have - but luckily for me, he didn't hound on the topic further.

"Waffles", he replied after giving it some thought - while I cut Laura a slice of cake from the fridge.

"You don't have a waffle maker...", I replied impatiently, as I handed her, her cup of tea and side of dessert.

"Well - your question wasn't specific - you asked me what I wanted - not what could be made", he justified.

"That's it - no breakfast for you.", I snapped. "Logan, we're having oatmeal pancakes with maple bacon and poached eggs.", I decided - just to rub it in.

"Yes!", Logan approved excitedly while he walked over and grabbed his cup of tea.

"What? - ", Laura sounded stunned.

"I'll make a few extras for you, Laura - don't worry", I winked.

"Thank you - darling", she smiled as she forked her slice of cake.

I leaned against the sink as I sipped my cup of tea. 'Mm - this is heaven', I smiled to myself while I closed my eyes to relish the experience even more.

When I opened them, Aiden was standing in front of me - eyeing me curiously.

In all honesty, the whole confession - or the lack of, still had me a bit riled up.

Probably not a good enough reason to deprive him of breakfast, but my temper tantrums, said otherwise.

Well, I agree it was out of the blue, so, it wasn't very fair for me to expect him to suddenly feel the same way - I mean, I didn't know I felt this way until I subconsciously blurted it out that night - but it still stings just the same.
