CHAPTER 3: THE BLACK SHEEP

Lesedi

It had been six months since I had opened The Black Sheep up for business.

Buying an old run-down restaurant and renovating it from scratch was definitely not the easy way out but it was so worth it.

On days like this, when I've finally found my routine and everything just works, one can't help but sigh!

Phone buzzes

Lesedi: "Hey Si, how was it?"

Sierra: "Oh great, just great, met his grandparents-who were amazing by the way; such nice people, had lunch-his mom made lamb-"

L: "Lamb? Oh...you love lamb. Did you pig out? Please tell me you didn't pig out-"

S: "Nope, I was very well behaved."

S: "So, I had lunch, said my goodbyes, tripped, fell down the stairs, broke my leg-"

L: "Wait-...What?"

S: "I'm in the hospital Les-"

L: "Which hospital?", I asked grabbing my keys from the counter drawer.

S: "Uh...St. Michael's."

S: "Umm...Lessie?"

L: "Yeah...?", I replied while peeping into the kitchen to make sure the prep team was doing alright.

S: "The dinner shift starts in 2 hours, and...well...you're missing your head server."

L: "Right... " I paused, calculating my options.

Saturday was one of our busiest nights and we needed all the help we could get.

Looks like we had only one option.

L: "Sierra...?"

S: "Yeah, I'm still here."

L: "What did the doc say?"

S: "Umm...it's a fractured ankle. I'll have a cast on for about, I don't know, 6 weeks maybe, maybe less"

L: "Alright...", I paused, "Here's what's going to happen. You're going to rest, heal,....and all that jazz. Don't even think of coming in until you do-I'll hire a part-timer or something. It'll be alright.", I said, more to convince myself than her.

S: "Uh...that's great and all. But umm...what about tonight?"

L: "I'll figure something out, Si. Don't worry about it. Now go rest. I'll see you first thing tomorrow morning.", I replied, making a mental note that I needed to find a server apron.

S: "Thanks, Lessie...I owe you big. See you tomorrow."

I put my keys back into the drawer and head to the back-office.

Sierra Lee was the head server at The Black Sheep.

She'd joined just before I opened and was pretty much a God-send.

She was finally meeting her boyfriend's grandparents at this big lunch gathering his family had every year for his grandparent's anniversary.

'Talk about dumb luck. Well, at least the lunch part went great.' , I thought to myself while putting on a server's apron I found in the storage cupboard.

Three hours into service

I was just entering the gazillionth order of the night into the system when a group of three guys and a girl stepped into The Black Sheep.
