~ Your POV ~

You cant shift the anxiety you feel building in your chest as you approach his bedroom door. What will today be like? How will he be today? The usual questions swarm your mind, and you clutch onto your book tighter as you hold it close to your chest. Knocking gingerly on his door, a soft, croaky voice is heard from the other side, a voice that immediately brings a smile to your face.
"Come in!" He calls from within his room.
Your moment of bliss is gone, and you quickly compose yourself with an emotionless expression, not knowing how he's going to feel today. Twisting the door knob, you gently push the door open and step inside, then close the door behind you and turn to face him, but he's not looking at you. For a few seconds, you watch him standing at the window with his back to you, as he looks out at the people sitting below his window, talking and laughing in deck chairs. Despite how badly you want to enjoy this moment, you cant allow yourself to.
"Mr Nestor?" You ask quietly, almost timidly, which sends a swirling spiral of guilt into your stomach.
He turns around then, and when he sees you, he looks you up and down, and smiles.
"Hey there! Please, call me Ethan, and who might you be?" He asks as he approaches you.
A small sting pierces through your chest, but you cover it up with a smile and shake his head "Im (Y/N), I've come to spend time with you today, if that's alright?" You tell him the same lie as you do everyday.
Ethan brings your hand to his lips and kisses it unexpectedly "It's a pleasure to meet you (Y/N), I'd be honoured to spend time with a lady as pretty as yourself."
Even in the circumstances, you cant help but blush and smile genuinely at his words "Thank you, Ethan, would you like to stay in here or go for a walk on the grounds?"
Ethan laughs slightly "Please, anything but staying in here, I've only been here a few minutes and Im already bored shitless!"
You laugh with him, even as your eyes catch sight of the wash basket filled with the clothes he's worn this week, and the dirty plate of food from the night before, you cant ignore the sinking feeling in your stomach.
"Let's go then!" Ethan encourages, holding his arm out to you, and you gladly loop one of your arms through his as you lead him out of his room, along the corridor, down the stairs, and out the back door. Along the way, you passed countless nurses who you've come to know, as well as elderly people who are scarily close to the same age as you, but Ethan doesnt seem to notice any of them, he cant take his eyes off of you.

Once you're outside, you lead him over to a tree with a patch of shade, and so many memories, under it. You help Ethan to sit down on the grass and lean against the tree trunk, and you sit down at a tree just a meter or two away, directly opposite him, with your outstretched legs next to each other.
"How're you feeling today Ethan?" You ask him tenderly.
Ethan sighs "I dont know, confused, I guess."
You nod "What are you confused about?"
He lifts his left hand and holds it out to you, pointing to it with his right hand "This."
You raise an eyebrow "You're confused about your hand?"
Ethan nods "Yeah. I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like something's missing from it, y'know? Like I've lost something."
You hold back tears as the two golden rings hanging on a chain around your neck under your shirt feel suddenly cold against your skin.
"Maybe I could read to you, take your mind off it?" You suggest desperately, keeping the tone of your voice even.
Ethan drops his hands and smiles at you "Definitely, I've known you a few minutes and already I know I could listen to you talk all day!"
You place your book in your lap and smile slightly back at him.
"Is that your favourite book?" Ethan asks curiously.
Your fingers trace the spine of the book as you nod "It's the best book ever written."
Ethan is immediately intrigued by your fascination with the book resting on your legs "What's it about?"
You smile down at it "The good thing about this book is that you can start reading at any chapter, you can read it in any order because all of the chapters are separate, and although they're in chronological order, they still make sense as separate stories."
Ethan nods in understanding "Will you read your favourite chapter to me?"
You look up at him "I dont have a favourite chapter, I love the whole book."
Ethan's thoughtful for a moment "The first chapter that comes to your mind, read that one."
You smile at the first chapter to appear in your head, and you pick up the book, flicking through the pages until you find the correct chapter.
"I stared up at him in utter disbelief, my white dress felt almost weightless against my skin as everyone else disappeared, and all I could see was him, stood in front of me, looking the most handsome I had ever seen him, especially in that damn suit. In that moment, I smiled at him, and he smiled back at me right away as he lifted my veil from over my face, and the tears that he was trying to hold back rolled freely down his cheeks. Seeing the reflection of love in his eyes, it brought me the same feeling it always did whenever I caught him looking at me that way. I think I'd always known since the day we met, but on that day I was completely certain that without him, life wouldnt be worth living."
Ethan nudges you "A love like that must be pretty powerful to have both of us smiling like this huh!"
You nod at him "Definitely."
