The Pretty Red Coat

They said I wouldn't feel a thing.

They said that, after so long, I would finally be free.

Such words, they didn't mean much to me.

I thought it was merely another empty promise.

Said, but not meant,

Promised, but never done,

Fated to fly away on a summer's night

Just like shards of broken memories.

Maybe they were telling the truth,

Yet, after so long, my broken heart remains unhealed.

And I wouldn't trust so easily.

I made my point to them immediately, but

They laughed but said nothing as I spoke.

After which, they said anything would do.

But they didn't mean a thing.

I refused and ran back home,

My hair ruffled from the wind.

The darkness loomed around me.

And I shivered, pulling my coat around me,

As I made my way back to safety.

Maybe it was fated.

For, suddenly, came a whimper

Not loud, but audible enough to be heard.

I spun around, nimbly,

To see a boy, no younger than three,

Looking wistfully at my coat

Like he wanted to have it.

I looked at him,

And he looked back.

A minute had gone by

And I decided to leave.

But then he croaked,

Softly and sickly,

"Please, Madam, may I have your pretty red coat?''

And I was dumbfounded,

But oddly, I didn't care at all.

What was happening to me?

Had they put that spell on me?

I didn't know,

But suddenly, I didn't feel a thing.

"No, you may not,''

I found myself saying thoughtlessly,

As, without a word,

I hurried towards the bridge

Near the shining blue stream,

My pretty red coat fluttering behind me.

I hear a sniff,

But I turned away.

All that was past,

For I didn't have feelings anymore.

Finally,

The young lady

In the pretty red coat

Was free.
