Christmas was over, but I still had one more gift to give.

The line was still ringing when he picked up.

"Hello?" Blake's voice was raspy on the other end of the line. I guess it makes sense, it was three in the morning.

"Hey, uh, I hope I'm not bothering you, but could you meet me? At the fountain?" My fingers were tapping nervously on my knee and I looked around my room for no reason at all.

I heard shuffling on Blake's end. "Yeah, gimme a few minutes." I heard his hand clamp over the phone, and I also heard some muffled words that made my stomach drop.

"Jaz, I gotta go. I'll be right back."

I ran a hand over my face, some kind of way to hide my humiliation even though no one could see me. "Hey, if this is a bad time, it can wait." I was already about to hang up when I heard what he said.

"No! I wanna see you, Raelene."

I sat on the edge of the fountain and waited for Blake to join me. I wasn't sure how long had passed before I gave up and started walking home.

"Raelene!" I looked over my shoulder to see Blake with such extreme bedhead that couldn't help but chuckle a little. Then I remembered the reason behind that bedhead.

"I was just leaving." I turned around and kept walking towards my home. I couldn't wait to crawl back into my bed and just sleep.

"I know, and I'm sorry. I was walking out the door when James gave me the third degree. I told him I was going for a walk." Blake jogged up next to me to grab my arm gently and turn me around. Ever since I told him about Alek, he'd been treating me like I was a piece of glass that could shatter at any moment. I didn't know if I should appreciate his efforts to keep from breaking me, or yell at him and tell him I'm the same girl who didn't swoon as soon as she saw him.

"Oh." I couldn't help but feel relieved that Blake hadn't told James he was leaving to see me.

Blake was looking me over and his eyes froze on the necklace that James gave me. "I see he took my advice."

"What?"

"He asked me what he should get you for the holidays and I suggested jewelry."

So James hadn't thought of it at all by himself. Then my heart warmed at the thought that he was struggling just as much as I was.

"I wanted to get you something, but I wasn't sure what." Blake's voice was so quiet that I almost missed it.

"Sorry, what was that?"

"Nothing, it's not important."

Before I could talk myself out of it, I stepped closer to him and hugged him. I felt him stiffen beneath me, but then he relaxed and wrapped his arms around me, too.

"Thank you for dealing with me that night," I whispered into his chest. I felt his heart beating faster than normal beneath my cheek. Mine was doing the same thing.

"What the hell?"

Blake and I both dropped our arms and looked at who the voice came from.

"What the hell are you doing Blake?!" James was marching towards us angrily. I barely had enough time to distance myself from Blake when the first punch was thrown.

James' fist connected with Blake's jaw with a sickening thud and Blake immediately reataliated, swinging back at James, and nailed his fist into his rib cage.
