You have to think of it as ruby toenails...
Before she underwent SME she could bear to have no reminder of Ruby so she vowed to paint her toenails that colour as a reminder even if she didn't know what it reminded her of. She doesn't like shoes because her subconscious will her to look at her feet and be reminded. Even when Bradley died she could bring herself to remove that colour from her life. The ruby red was the only colour left as Ruby was the only member of her family left.But she doesn't know why she does it but her sixth sense is willing her to be reminded and remember.
