Where did the idea that James was hella annoying to Lily come from? I think it was just in the way he was portrayed in the scene in books. I personally think Lily had a huge crush on him and was to stubborn to admit it. However after the scene on the books she was like "I don't know...." but then Snape was like "dark magic makes me feel good!!! Mudblood" and lily was like welp "Potter I don't have anymore friends! Wanna be friends. Wth?"

Jk said that James had only asked Lily out twice I believe. He seems like that one cocky yet really nerdy kid in the movies who has a huge crush on the lead, but is also the leads jockey type lover.
