Chapter 44.

*****

I glanced over at David before I looked back at the road as I drove. It had been a while since he said anything. The airport was an hour's drive away and we had been driving for about forty-five minutes. I knew something was wrong; he hadn't been quiet since I picked him up from the restaurant a couple of days ago. He had slept over at our house and last night he asked if someone would give him a drive to the airport. Sudden. He hadn't mentioned that he was leaving at all until that. I wanted to ask him what was wrong but we weren't that close, it would be weird. But this was weird too.

"What's wrong, Dave?" I finally spoke.

He looked at me and gave a smile.

"Nothing. I'm cool."

"You're leaving kind of suddenly, aren't you? I thought you would stay until classes start again." His classes would begin the same week as ours would, so he had a week left before he needed to be back at school.

"There's no point staying here." He shrugged, "I mean, it was fun hanging out with you guys, thank you." he added.

"Sergio?" I asked.

"Kind of hard to visit someone when they're never around." he said.

"But he is."

"Have you seen him?" He asked.

I sucked my lips in. No. Not really, not since we made up. He called last night though. I glanced at David to see his knowing face. He sighed pushing his hair back as he ran his fingers through it. I looked back at the road and switched lanes to get around a truck we had been trailing for a while now.

David groaned bringing my attention back to him.

"I guess I shouldn't complain about it, he's the reason I'm in varsity right now." He said, "Still, a heads up would have been nice. I didn't know I was making a trade."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I wanted to study, he knew that. He promised he would help me, I was sure it was impossible, but he did it. I probably would have chosen differently if I knew he would disappear too."

"Disappear?"

"I see him a hand full of times more than we see our father. It's practically the same thing except Sergio sends money."

"Your father?" I glanced at him as we reached the airport.

"He left." He shrugged. "Thanks for driving me." added as I parked.

"No problem." I said following him out of the car. I watched as he grabbed his bag from the back and grinned at me.

"Will you stick around?" He asked. I raised my eyebrows confused, "It'll be hard to be with someone you never see, Alexander, but I know you make him happy. So stick around? He can't be busy forever, right?" He gave a humourless chuckle.

I nodded and waved him off as he disappeared into the building. I climbed back into my car.

I didn't know David had not seen Sergio either. I frowned as I drove. He couldn't be this busy, but I had not heard from Clyde either.

I smiled. Maybe I could get him to cut everything off again, like we had at the loft. Probably not. He was really focused on work right now... I could always have Clyde help again...

"What were you doing upstairs?"

"Packing."

"You already have all your stuff."
