When I was 17, my father thought I should be formally educated at the university of Ingolstadt and so I was. Before then, however, Elizabeth caught a mild case of scarlet fever. When she was nearly recovered, mother went against our wishes to visit her. To our despair, mother caught a severe case of the fever. On the 3rd day, her fever was awful and she died. I took weeks to grieve before going back to school.

It was challenging to leave home, to leave all that I had ever known and all of my friends. Elizabeth took over the role of mother to the others. When I arrived at the university, I met M. Krempe, the professor of natural philosophy, and confided in him my studies. He explained to me what I had been studying was garbage, and gave me a new list to spend my time studying.

I also met M. Waldman, who was very unlike M. Krempe. When speaking of the old masters, he said that those whom I had previously studied promised much, and produced little, while the scientists of today promised nothing, and produced some of the greatest wonders of our time. I found new respect for M. Waldmen. He offered me use of his tools, and his tutelage. That day decided my destiny.
