Robert Walton is writing a letter to his sister, Mrs. Margaret Saville. It is July 7th. Robert Walton is speaking.

I must be brief in this letter. I am safe and my voyage is going well. This letter is reaching you via a merchant. He is more lucky then I, as he will see his home soon.

I am, however, joyful. My men are bold and the sheets of dangerous ice do not seem to shake their confidence. The warm wind that blows us toward our goal gives me hope. No danger has befallen us other then a few ship incidents that were quickly repaired. I will be pleased if nothing worse will happen to us.

Goodbye, sister. You can be assured that I will be cautious for both of us.
