"Well I will never call you names. Or give you nasty looks. You're a very sweet boy" I state.

"Thank you" he replies with a smile.

"Slade says I should be nice to everyone. Even if they're mean to me. But if they hit me, I have to defend myself" he informs.

"He's right, they're very awful people out there" I say knowing from experience but never having the guts to stand up for myself.

"He also says I have to be strong, show courage, and obey the rules at all times" he adds.

"Wow Slade teaches you very good things" I state.

He nods.

"And I like your mom. She's a great cook" he compliments.

"She is" I agree.

"I wish I had a mommy who can cook for me. And a mommy who shows love to me like the other kids at school always say" he wishes.

I frown as my heart breaks for Steve.

"I'm sorry Steve" I apologize.

"It's ok" he replies softly his blue eyes demonstrating sadness.

"At least you have Slade" I state.

His smile reappears.

"Yeah! Slade is the best, I love that he's my big brother. He's the only person I have in this life" he informs.

In smile, but question within me.

What about his father?

Does Steve even see him that often?

"Grace" he calls.

I snap back into reality turning towards him giving him all my attention.

"Can you promise me something?" he questions.

"Sure anything" I nod.

"Promise to never leave Slade, or me" he replies.

"I promise" I assure.

"Pinky promise" he adds holding up his small pinky.

"Pinky promise" I repeat with a smile wrapping my pinky around his.

~*~

"Thank you for taking care of him" Slade says ruffling Steve's hair.

"I hope you behaved good" he adds.

"No problems, I'll always be available if you need me. And he was wonderful" I state with a smile.

Steve smiles back at me.

"You're the best baby-sitter I ever had!" he cheers.

We laugh.

"I'm glad, hope to see you soon" I reply.

"See you in school, I hope your hand is healed" Slade responds.

"Ok, and yeah it's getting there" I inform twisting my wrist around a bit.

"Wait!" a voice calls out.

God, why does this keep happening to me?

Why can't my mother leave my one and only friend alone, forever?

"Stay, for, dinner" she offers breathing heavily.

"Nooooo" I answer.

"Grace! I'm not speaking to you" she argues with her hands on her hips.

"Mother, I'm speaking to you. Slade has things to do ok. He can't be here all day eating your food like he has no life because you want him to" I protest.

"Slade?" she questions ignoring me.

I roll my eyes.

Typical mother.

"Sorry Mrs.Evans I'll have to pass" he apologizes.

I let out a sigh of relief secretively.

My mom frowns.

"Ok, but make sure to come by another time. Bye Steve!" she says with a wave.

"Bye!" he calls as they both wave at us.

"Mother haven't you humiliated me enough for a week?!" I exclaim as we enter the house again.

She giggles.

"You're very funny dear" she states sarcastically.

"I'm serious mom, this is why I didn't want you to know about Slade. You'll chase him away!" I inform.

"Oh I see. Someone is crushing on Slade!" she sings.

"Shhh! Am not" I argue.

"Are too" she replies back with a grin.

I sigh.

"You know what, think whatever mother, I'm done" I state making my way to my room.

"Yea, because you know you like him! Because you know I'm right!" she calls out.

I just let out a groan in response.

"Mother knows best!" she finishes off giggling.
