Not Worth the Candle

Running her hand through her hair, she sighed out loud as she raised her gaze to the afternoon sun; it would soon set and make way for the moon. Katherine could feel it in her blood, the call of the moonlight whenever it comes out to lighten the darkness; if only it could enlighten them about this whole key situation.

"Something on your mind?"

A voice called out to her that made her gaze over her shoulder, at the blue-haired teen wearing a short, blue sundress; a smile was on her face as always, but it somehow held a much deeper meaning. Katherine could not figure out what, but did not wish to, knowing that it may be possible for the impossible to happen – something she did not wish to occur at all.

Katherine shook her head as she returned her gaze to the sky – orange and blue blended into a fine dark red, nearly violet in hue. Hailey walked up to her as she stood beside her with her eyes on the ground as though a shy school girl about to ask her crush for her number.

"I know something's bothering you," Hailey spoke as her foot made circles on the ground, showing how nervous she was for some reason, "You're quieter than usual and you're being so domestic for a few days now."

Katherine smiled for a brief second, "Old habit."

"I can tell," Hailey giggled for a moment, "But really," she set her tone straight as she turned to her side to look up at her, aware that she had grown an inch taller than her; she cupped her cheek and slowly turned her eyes to meet her worried ones, wondering what was running through her mind. "What're you thinking of right now?"

Katherine leant into her palm, "You."

"You have to be a little more specific than that," Hailey smiled and chuckled slightly as Katherine kept a straight gaze on her. Hailey rubbed circles on Katherine's cheek as they held their stares, wondering which one of them was going to break the silence in between; she could sense the unease in the wolf, but it disappears as soon as she notices it.

Sliding her hand down to her neck, then to her nape, Hailey slowly pulled Katherine closer as she leant closer to her, hoping to meet her lips halfway; she had missed the sweet taste of her soft lips. But as their lips got closer, Katherine looked away and made the young Faerie's heart weigh for some reason.

"I'm sorry," Katherine apologised as she steered her gaze away from those dark amber eyes that she wanted to stare into for days; there was something inside her that told that she should no longer do these things. Feeling an ache in her chest, she took a deep breath to hide the pain before she walked around the truck and climbed into the bed, leaving the fae to stand there and wonder what she had done wrong.

Chimes sung nearby, the door to the diner swung open and out came Jesslyn with Art behind her; the tall tan man had his eyes examining the hunter's features, only to gain a glare from her from over her shoulder. Jesslyn noticed the unusual scene before her, at how the two teens seemed to be down – somehow dejected for no apparent reason.

"We're leaving now," she announced as Hailey turned to her with a smile in place, completely hiding the fact that something happened between her and Katherine. Jesslyn watched Hailey climb into the truck, where Katherine remained in the bed; she did not wish to pry about what happened and allowed the young teen to ride there, leaving Art to sit with them in front.

What could possibly be wrong now? Jesslyn muttered internally as she made her way to the driver's seat. Before she opened the door, she took a quick look at the trees, at the dirt path next to the diner and merely offered a small smile; she could not forget the memory she had left this place, wondering if she would ever see that lone wolf again.

Climbing into the truck, Jesslyn frowned at how they were seated – Art was beside her whilst Hailey took the window sit. It vexed her, knowing that he will try to dawdle with her for the whole ride and she did not wish to bicker whilst on the road; she was certain that she would not have enough patience to sit there and refrain herself from ripping his oesophagus out.
