THE WEIGHT OF LYING

Two entire weeks. Nora was going crazy.

Not only did she have to lie about what she knew, what she thought she knew, and what she was actively trying to know, but they found more bodies. Her idea of people who left after getting their miracle proved itself to be useful, given that they were apparently the main targets. Nothing made sense. Why would anyone kill people who were just living their lives ?

In order to keep herself from imploding, Nora decided to spend her time walking around in the library, and she was now able to find pretty much all subjects covering the basics of the mystic arts.

She looked at her phone and checked her list for the day. “None of mine died today,” she whispered.

Stephen looked up from his book and nodded. “Good.”

Since Wong decided that these people needed protection, Nora inherited all the names on her list to take care of. Not only did she have to receive texts from people she didn’t know, telling her they were still alive, but she was living in fear of any of these people calling her if they were ever attacked by someone. She tried to tell Wong she wouldn’t be able to protect anyone without burning them in the process, but he didn’t listen. To him, she was able to fight and it was enough.

She closed her book and sighed. She’d never be able to cast a proper spell. She was a lost cause, only here so the sorcerers could keep an eye on her ring. Nora didn’t practice fire magic, she was the fire. The Flames were a part of her, and she’d never be able to separate them from anything.

She even stopped going to practice since everyone was scared of her and the fiery blades she was conjuring.

Before she could open the next book on her pile, Tobias showed up to ask her where to find a book he was looking for. She smiled at pointed at a bookshelf behind him. When he was far enough not to hear her, she turned back to Stephen.

“He’s nice, but I kinda wish I never talked to him,” she whispered.

“Do you really know where each book goes ?”

“Most of them. It keeps me calm to be here,” she explained. “And he needs help.”

He closed his book and crossed his arms. “You could ask for his job. He’d have more time to study and you won’t get any better.”

“It started as a compliment, but then you just decided to insult me. How did no one try to kill you before, that’s a mystery,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“I had a very skilled assistant to transfer all the death threats to the authorities.”

Nora rolled her eyes. “Of course you had an assistant. It explains why no one is getting the fridge filled in the Sanctum. You’re waiting for someone else to do it.”

“You don’t even have food in your kitchen, Nora.”

“Because my brother is feeding me. Why would I cook ?” She stopped and narrowed her eyes. “How do you know what’s in my kitchen or not ?”

“I needed a coffee.”

“I’m gonna kill you.”

“You won't. We're magically married, remember ?” he said with a proud smile. “Besides, I called you and you said something like ‘hm okay sure’.”

“That’s what I say when I’m not listening.”

Stephen ignored her comment and looked at Tobias. “So ? You want his job ?”
