BABYSITTING

The first week of learning had been quite intense, and Nora was happy to leave Kamar-Taj to get back home. She only had a small day of training in New York before Wong decided that the Flames were too out of control. From Nora’s point, it looked like he was only tired to recast the spells over the place each time she was accidentally burning them.

It wasn’t any better in Kamar-Taj anyway. Not only was Nora a walking disaster, but she had to apologize at least twice to all of the other students for nearly burning them alive. She had to talk to them.

Before she could go back home, Strange and Wong left her in charge of babysitting the Sanctum, not even leaving her a second to argue. They switched timezones and she immediately walked outside to get her first nicotine fix of the day. She lit up her cigarette and closed her eyes. One day she’d stop, but she was too tired to even consider it for now.

“It will kill you,” someone said next to her.

Nora looked up and smiled at Christine. She nodded at the large box she was holding. “What’s that ?”

“Everything I could save from Stephen’s madness,” Christine said with a laugh. “Can you give it to him ?”

“You can wait inside. They’ll be back soon.” Christine winced and took a step back. “Nothing is going to kill you inside. Wait, some things might. As long as you don’t run around throwing them down, it should be fine.”

“Who would do that ?” Christine asked, a concerned expression on her face. Nora arched a brow at her and rolled her eyes. “He did that ?”

“Well, when you’re somewhere magic with a lot of magic stuff and someone specifically tells you not to touch anything, wouldn’t it be the first thing you do ?” Nora asked, repressing a laugh. “I’m surprised this place is still standing.”

Christine put down her box and walked closer to Nora. “What about you ? Everything under control ?”

“As long as I don’t get stabbed, yes.” She sighed, remembering all the fires she had to take down the past few days. “And as long as I don’t try to do magic.”

“But Stephen said you weren’t into this… thing, when I met you in the hospital.”

“I am now. They forced me into it.”

“How ?”

“Long story. But I’m here now.” Nora bent over to grab the box and smiled. “Come on in. You’ll see there’s nothing to fear. Just don’t touch anything.”

Nora looked around her to check if anyone was looking and placed her cigarette in the palm of her hand. A second later, it was burning up and turned to dust. Christine gasped and reluctantly followed Nora inside the Sanctum.

She didn’t wait and led her to the library. It was probably the least scary place inside, and a good way to realize that magic was not as dangerous as it looked. Nora pushed the door and smiled. “See ? Just books. That’s basically what they do. They read and drink tea.” She put down the box. “Evil beings who want to eat Earth are very, very, uncommon.”

“What did you say ?”

“You didn’t know.” Christine violently shook her head and Nora shrugged. “If anyone asks, I didn’t tell you.”

“New York ?”

“Hong Kong,” Nora corrected. “You can’t keep all the fun to yourselves.”

Christine sighed and walked between the shelves, looking at the books. “He’s definitely doing better than before.”

“What about you ?” Nora asked, following her.
