APRIL SECOND,
TWO THOUSAND AND SEVEN

8:25 in the morning

"DO YOU HAVE TO GO?" whined Tobio, latching onto Sora's sleeves. The older boy was dressed for his first day at Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High, a school close to their houses. Tobio would be joining him in two years time; until then, Sora Suzuki had to go all alone to a new school once more.

Not that he minded.

For when he returned home, he knew that Tobio Kageyama, living right next door to him, would be waiting with a bright and inquisitive grin. He would demand to know how his day went and whether the volleyball team was any good. After all, the boy aspired to be the best setter out there, and he had heard that Kitagawa Daiichi has an excellent track record in his preferred sports field.

"Yes, Tobio," Sora responded, amused. "It's my first day. I can't miss it."

Tobio held onto him tighter. "Take me with you!" he requisitioned. "I want to come with you!" Ocean eyes bore into sea-coloured ones, pleading, begging. And had it not been for Kazuyo Kageyama's intervention, Sora would have scooped Tobio into his arms and carried him all the way to his new Junior High without any other push or any other demand.

"Come on, Tobio," came Kazuyo's caring voice, his fading blue eyes crinkling at the corners. "You have your own school to attend. I'll walk you there and head to work."

"But Jii-san!"

"No buts, Tobio. You know the rules."

"Unfair."

"Life isn't fair." Miwa Kageyama waltzed out of the house in her new work attire. At nineteen years old, eight years older than Tobio, Miwa was beginning her career as a hairdresser. Now that she was out of school, she had taken up a part-time job. She would be working at a local salon for the next few months until her gap year was over and done with, and she had to return to university. "Stop throwing your temper tantrum and hurry to school. You wouldn't want to make Sora late on his first day, now would you?"

Crossing his arms over his chest, Tobio huffed and turned his head to the side.

His cheeks filled with air.

"No," he mumbled.

"Don't worry, Tobio," Sora reassured, reaching down to ruffle the younger's head. "I'll come home right after school!"
