"A Legalistic Approach to the Age of 17"

Failing is an

easy thing to do once

you reach sixty.

At seventeen you feel

ridiculous because

at that age, you're still

not used to feeling foolish

and everything appears tragic

because you

just read Macbeth

in English class.

Always the optimist,

you're sure that someone

out there

is suffering just

as much as you,

yet, as a tentative believer

in Murphy's Law, you're

just as sure that

it's one of the few

people you can

legitimately tell yourself

you respect.

Stopping in the middle

of a street, one day,

it dawns on you to just

plain hex yourself

and put some foolish curse on

all your family and close

associates and hopefully,

with some good fortune,

you can become used to the taste

of feet in your mouth

and get on with your life

by the time you're sixty.
