"Meditations on the Art of Distance, No. 9"

Tonight, within the confines

of a darkened tunnel,

along a valley's edge

carved by a creek

that feeds a river

that runs downstream from you,

I do not seal Pandora's Box.

Instead I leave it open,

a blessing on the place,

a way for me to bring you

into this holy valley,

this sepulchre,

this shrine unto my childhood.

Someday you will be here in the flesh

and I will show you where these words were writ

invisibly,

with frozen pen,

by flashlight's glow

and the blessing

of a night of stars.

For now, know that our tears of longing

still mingle

in these waters.
