"Meditations on the Art of Distance, No. 2"

On the phone, our voices steal the melancholy

      of sailors,

   lost and cast adrift

         in foreign seas,

      our conversation a list

            of unspoken longings.

But it is our hearts that know the truth of things,

and decry the morse, morose convenience

      of this careful S.O.S.

"Live," they say,

   "Have faith,"

      "Believe."

"Speak your poems into these bottles

      and seal your breath within.

The sea, she will deliver them

            in love,

            in trust,

            in time."

We live in an age of instant communication, of voice and video travelling farther and faster than the speed of thought, leaving our laggard synapses weary, wired, and wide open.

Know that some words are like curdled milk and sour grapes—wretched in their hour but favoured by friends and lovers if they're only given time to ripen in their casks.
