Queen Elizabeth II has handed the throne to her son the Prince of Wales.
The 96-year-old monarch signed the instrument of abdication in London after 70 years on the throne.
Charles has now become the country's first king since 1952.
Huge crowds of partygoers are in London to pay tribute to the popular queen.
'Happy and grateful'
Queen Elizabeth had announced her intention to stand down this morning, saying her son was ready to reign and that it was time for the throne to be held by " a able body".
