Chapter 64

“Never mind I’ll find,

Someone like you.

I wish nothing but the best for you

Don’t forget me, I beg,

I remember you saying,

Sometimes it lasts, in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.”

-Adele, Someone Like You

“Bombs away!”

Something – or rather, someone – landed heavily on my chest, jolting me out of sleep pretty effectively.

“Go away,” I mumbled, turning my head to face the pillow.

“No chance, buddy,” a voice smirked, and a jet of water hit my face.

“Shit!” I sat up, shaking water out my hair, and beside me, the twins and Maddy laughed.

Nothing says welcome home like being violently woken up at seven in the morning.

“Bet you missed us loads, mate,” Alex said cheerfully, holding up the water gun.

“Dude, you have a mate now,” I complained, wiping water off my face. “Aren’t you supposed to be more, I dunno, grown up?”

Alex looked horrified. “Seriously? No one told me that!”

“He’s following your example, Theo,” Jared said seriously, and I hit him with my damp pillow.

Maddy giggled and threw her balled-up blanket at me, trying to get my attention. I didn’t really feel like getting out of bed but I knew she’d want me to play along like I always did, so I pretended to shout in anger, and she jumped off the bed with a squeal. I started to leap after her, but a well-timed shot from Alex made me coil reflexively at the jet of cold water, and I landed hard on the floor on my back. Maddy playfully sat on my legs.

“I hate you guys so much.”

“Wasn’t me.” Jared pointed at his twin, who shot him with the water gun. “Jesus Christ, someone take that thing off him!”

Dave came up minutes later to see what all the noise was about, and effectively wrestled the water gun off Alex.

“Go get ready for school, Muppet. Or should I send you back to the nursery?”

“Burn!” Jared crowed, even though it wasn’t really that great.

“I have a mate,” Alex reminded him, and Jared sighed. Apparently, that sentence won Alex most of the arguments.

“Out. Now,” Dave grinned, and squirted them both with water. They yelped, and I burst out laughing.

“You just got owned!” That earned me another cold blasting from Dave. Maddy squealed and backed away from me so none of the water could hit her.

“You feel like going to school today, Theo?” Dave asked, concern mixing with the humour in his eyes.

“You mean he gets a choice?” Alex said, dumbfounded.

“Look at him, he’s fine!” Jared prodded me with his toe. “He can cope.”

“That’s up for Theo to decide,” Dave said, and as an afterthought, shot them both with water again. I held back a snigger.

“I’ll see what Addie wants to do,” I told Dave.

“Not fair,” Jared mumbled.

Dave nodded at the twins. “You two. Get ready. Now.” He ruffled Maddy’s hair as she pushed herself to her feet.
