Chapter No.21. Transformation.

When Robert came into the kitchen the next morning, his wife was just getting ready to put breakfast out on the table.

"The local news is running rampant with the tornado rescue we did," she said. "They're saying that a mystery couple rescued the kids in the collapsed gym building. The rescue crews are saying that they were unable to move the roof sections, but that the mystery couple did as if they were made out of cardboard."

Robert shook some pepper on his hard-over egg and bacon. "I'm surprised that they haven't identified us by now."

"Maybe it's the fact that what they're reporting is unbelievable."

"You would think that someone would have gotten good video of what we did."

Janet poured coffee in her husband's and her cup. "I think they were frozen in place. Maybe we did that."

"If we did, it was unintentional."

Janet punched a fork into her sausage. "I don't understand why we could be a God experiment. I thought that God was omnipotent and all knowing."

Robert thought about it for a moment before he replied. "Yes, but perhaps God must deal with quantum probability because it always exited along with Him. His grand creation resulted in we humans having evolved with free will, which by its very nature is subject to probability."

"So, He decided to try an experiment using us to see if we would act humanely despite having god-like powers."

"Yes," Robert said. "You have to wonder if He's tried this experiment before."

"Maybe it's the reason we haven't been recognized."

"I would think that's because of what the Vestal Virgins said."

"Why are they Vestal Virgins?" James asked. "I thought that was a pagan concept."

"It was, but I think that we don't fully understand the symbology. Vestal Virgins were chaste and tended the eternal fire. Perhaps, it means that they are the protectors of human life, which would make them angels."

The landline phone rang, and Janet answered it. She held it out to her husband. "It's the FBI."

He took the phone. "Yes?"

"We have a problem that we believe only you could fix," Mark said.

"Okay, I'll be there." He handed the phone back to his wife. "We'll all go."

"Why, they only asked for you?"

"I believe we must act as one from now on." He stood up. "Just see the location in my mind and you'll be there."

When Robert, Janet and James appeared in Mark and Joe's office, the FBI agents looked at them with surprise.

"We act as one," Robert told them. "We are the Incredibles."

Mark and John exchanged glances before Mark spoke. "I don't know if you could do anything about this, but NASA has informed us that a large asteroid is on course to strike the Earth. They told us because we would be part of the national team that would try to maintain order after the destruction."

"We would need to talk to NASA astronomers about this. We would have to know the exact position and course of the asteroid."

Mark gestured to Joe. "Call them."

After an extensive phone conversation, Joe looked at Robert. "They'll talk to you."

"Where?" Robert asked.
